Urgent...Pls pls help...i'm so so upset!

We had a new table and chairs four weeks ago andits the only decent piece of furniture we have in the whole house. We bought a table protector and cushions for the chairs and it cost us £350 (reduced from £899) and we were so proud of it.

My girls knew how hard we saved for it and really look after it too.

We had friends round yesterday and they have three children and i've just discovered that one of them has written on one of the chairs in red biro.

I've tried water and have tried a bit of bi-carb of soda and used a scubber and it won't come off. I don't know what else to do and i can't stop crying as it is so long since we have had anything knew.

Pls can someone help me. I know the instructios just said polish with bees wax.

Have you tried a small amount of neat stardrops? Alternatively, nail polish remover may work - I'd spot test it on a part of the furniture that isn't visible (like the base) just to check it won't damage it, then apply with a cotton bud. HTH!

I haven't any stardops is there anything else i could use?
  • Is the writing on wood or fabric? If it's on wood then a professional french polisher may be able to sort it out. If this is the case I would suggest asking the parents of the child to contribute to the costs involved.
I'm so sorry this has happened, I had exactly the same problem with stuff being ruined by a destructive nephew.

  • Found this http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf513765.tip.html One reply says baking soda (bicarb ? its amercian site), another suggests toothpaste ! good luck
  • Kippers - big hugs

If it has to be repolished, it is possible to do it yourself - but it's timeconsuming in terms of a little bit of time each day for 2-3 weeks - to build up about 20 coats of french polish - although one bottle from B&Q or somewhere similar will do. Was the wood stained - as this is the hardest to match if it has to be sanded down? My dad has done various bits of refinishing over the years and dh and I have also done it from necessity.

  • Ah I've look at them but never tried, I may well give one a whirl to see !
  • If it's just red biro pen, nail polish remover will definitely get it off and won't damage the wood. Once you've removed the pen marks, just use water to get any residual nail polish remover off (if left on, or rubbed too vigorously, then it may also remove the varnish on the wood), then clean it according to the instructions you mentioned.
