Money Moral Dilemma: Should I go back to the supermarket that didn't charge me and offer to pay?

Firstly, check all your bank cards, you may have inadvertently used a different card. Second, if you shopped at Tesco, they'll be able to trace your purchases through your club card. Other supermarkets may be able to do the same. Thirdly, if its bothering your conscience, speak to customer services. If they can't find it, at least you will know you have tried all avenues.2

I'm shocked by all the dishonest responses. Yes,you should go back and offer to pay0

Avalonadam said:Of course not. Shrinking package sizes , massive price rises and staff less check outs. They make massive profits from you and me anyway
All the large corporations are currently very pointed without a doubt and are going to get far worse in the very near future .
The theme plays out over and over .
The PO and Thames Water are the current obvious in the news of how they can do whatever they like and the public ends up paying for it one way or the other.0 -
Did you get a receipt but then lost it, or did you definitely pay for the shopping. There are regular occasions of walk outs on self service tills where people believe the transaction has happened but sometimes it doesn't go thro. So in theory if this happens then you haven't paid and you walked out without paying. However if the transaction completed and you got a receipt but now mis laid it then fair game. Do whatever you feel is right to do0

Not your problem if they had faulty till technology on the day you were shopping. How many times do supermarkets overcharge because someone hasn't updated the database and people have to go and queue at customer service for a refund - and that's only if they notice. Swings and roundabouts. Let it go.1

You didn't actively steal, as you thought you'd paid, but now you know that you have had items for which you haven't paid. We all know, even those on here who have given you very different 'advice', (I'm always astonished what a lot of dishonest people there are, - and who are happy to admit it) that the right thing to do would be to inform the store and give you them the opportunity to charge you. The problem is that the devil supplies lots of reasons not to do the right thing, like the responses on here, the supermarkets make loads of money, it was their error, you tried to pay, etc.. It's up to you in the end, do you value your integrity or the money more?0

I check my bill almost every shopping trip and usually, 2 out of 3 shops, I find an error, always in favour of the supermarket. I mark it up and at the next shopping trip I point out the error and get a refund. It takes a lot of my time but I get so angry at their mistakes. I have yet to have an error in my favour and I'm not sure what I would do if there is one. I hope I would be honest enough to declare it. I have also had a shopping bill come through several weeks after the shop, so I would wait a while before declaring it. Then declare it and the shop will probably find it easier not to collect payment. You will then feel better about the situation.2

I'm with the group that say wait 6 months to see if it gets debited. Not quite the same but I bought a meal at a burger chain say 12 years ago and paid by credit card. I think it took 3 months for the transaction to show up on my account. The advantage I had was that I got the receipt and entered the transaction to my money tracking software, and could only reconcile the transaction once it appeared on my statement. Can't remember the date it listed as the transaction date.Perhaps it is too late now, but sometimes, for a credit card, the available balance doesn't match your total limit minus your spending shown against your account. The difference will be pending transactions. Does the pending transaction amount include the supermarket spend? So wait 6 months, then if you remember and can be bothered, I would speak to the supermarket's customer service.0

No, I've read many posts on here in the past where a supermarket had charged people 3 months after they purchased what they had done, it put people into a very worrying position, some couldn't pay rent and risked eviction, some couldn't afford to buy food, some had not realised what had happened and were very worried and stressed about what looked like an amount leaving their account where they were maybe at work or at night sleeping or something else. I think companies can request the payment from your bank and just take it months later. I's a big worry to be honest. Leave it be; they'll take it when they want to and there's nothing you can do to get them to take the money already or at least have an explanation as to what had happened.0
