I wouldn't call it theft. If you can't remember how much you paid, if you went back to offer payment then I suspect they would tell you to go home and forget about it. As you say, it's a major supermarket, not a local corner shop, so they're in a position to right-off the loss. It's probably a unique experience for you. What is puzzling is how you paid by card yet it doesn't show on your statement. Be aware that it could appear on your next statement, so don't be over-concerned about your situation here.

It will have dropped off your pending transactions, but will re appear (however many months later)  as a debited transaction. These delays happen and reconcile eventually.
  • The payment may turn up at a later time so better to leave it.
  • If you went to an staffed checkout they would not let you leave until the transaction was confirmed. I therefore believe you went to a self checkout, went through the process and waved your card [contactless] at the machine and walked away without confirming the transaction is recorded. In which case you have just been involved in shoplifting. Alternatively if this was not the case and you have a receipt, then fine they or the card company made the mistake not you.  Self checkout fraud is huge in the UK and shops are now installing cameras to split screen record the person and what they are scanning.
  • Hi, this happened to me a few years ago but I'd just paid with a debit card and I spotted it soon after and did have the receipt (whereas you don't).  The supermarket were absolutely amazed and wrote a personal letter to me afterwards to say thank you so I don't think they get many people going back to them.  I personally would go back to the supermarket and see what they say then you'll have done all you can.  Maybe they'll check with their accounts to see if it's due to go through but it's been a bit late in processing.  Keep all your correspondence about it.  Good luck deciding.

I did that once. I spent about 20 mins with the assistant manager and a trolley trying to recreate my shopping. It was acutely embarrassing, I got a firm impression that the assistant manager had better things to do, and it was an hour of my life I'll never see again.
No-one loves a pedant. I wouldn't do it again. I'd rather donate the cash where it serves a useful purpose.

I tend to not believe this has happened its just  mse storytime or the card will be billed at a later date but if it did  happen I would go back until it didnt work and so would most of the people in the world .
No matter what they say online .

I have seen money come out of a ATM and heard it also happened to someone else.......but thats next weeks storytime  .
It happened to me, whether you believe it or not.
  • This happened to me once. I don't know exactly what went wrong but although my card wasn't charged at the time of purchase, the payment got taken a few weeks later. Quite annoying actually, but definitely don't attempt to pay anything - you'll just cause hassle for everyone involved.

Bizarre take. Of all the things I've seen on MSE's moral dilemmas this actually sounds like one of the more plausible scenarios.
  • Most likely, there is some delay in the bank's system or the POS-terminal. I can't believe anyone can shop for free somewhere. Just wait. Greetings!
