Money Moral Dilemma: Should I go back to the supermarket that didn't charge me and offer to pay?

I had similar happen to me, but the amount showed up a YEAR later on my credit card. I thought it was a mistake, but checked through my statements and realised there was a week missing (I spend roughly the same amount each week and not realised at the time (or maybe I thought I'd got a freebie - can't remember)). So it will probably catch up with you.1

Ed264 said:What is puzzling is how you paid by card yet it doesn't show on your statement. Be aware that it could appear on your next statement, so don't be over-concerned about your situation here.I've only had this happen once. Paid by card at local Morrisons. Definitely authorised and accepted. receipt shows paid etc and all good.Yet, when reconciling my paper receipts with statement the next month, I have one more receipt than I do card transactions. Hmmm?It appeared delayed by a few weeks, on the next statement, shown against Morrisons in a city I've never shopped in!I can only assume that Morrisons authorised the payment etc. but had a data handling problem and did not run the transaction to TAKE the money. Eventually, someone at regional/head office found this (and other customers in the same situation?) and used the authorisation to take the payments under THEIR store code. It all worked out in the end ... but there was a delay.

It will debit your account at some point, so just prepared for it to be charged. Always make sure you get a receipt in future, at least you will have some evidence should there ever be challenges about this.
The only time I have ever had delays in transactions debiting my account is when I've spent abroad. Most of them are within 1 day of the spend, or the nearest working day.0 -
You can’t call yourself a thief, as you believed you had paid for the goods at the time. However, if you do feel guilty about it I would simply email the supermarket’s Head Office explaining everything, as you have done here, and see what they say. I doubt very much they will go to the bother of trying to trace you from an email address to reclaim the relatively small amount involved, so in the very unlikely event they ask you to stump up, you can decide at that point what to do. To me the most important thing to remember is that none of this was your fault so don’t beat yourself up about it!0

Supermarkets are such a rip-off, for once you got a true bargain. I wouldn’t give it back but I would put a few toys in their collection for needy/hospitalised kids at Christmas. Beyond that, 🤬🤬🤬🤬 them, they rob all of us on a regular basis!0

On top of the inflated cost to shop .....supermarket car parks are infested with unregulated private parking scammers wanting £100 plus 70 illegal costs .... a MP stated in parliament that the private parking companys were as useful as a multi-story car park in the Gobi desert .0 -
Really? Life's too short.0

I once waited until I got home before I checked a restaurant receipt. It turned out to be one tenth of what it should have been so I went back and offered to pay the difference. They refused the offer. I was financially no worse off but my conscience was clear.

In Asda when there was a power cut tey just asked everyone to leave and take their shopping with them. Perhaps they claimed it all on insurance, along with all the spoilt items in the chillers.I did not see anyone grabbing high price items on the way out!0

I had this happen to me years ago with Virgin Trains, the payment was eventually taken 5 months later.1
