Meant to say as well.....I wonder how much Vegas has changed since I was there last.....Nov 2007 seems ages away.....What was the name of that new hotel that was under construction opposite PH

Are you thinking about the four new city center condo hotels or the new PH tower? Vdara, Mandarin, Harmon, Veer are the City center constructions

that was all part of the City Center thing wasn't? it was due for completion in 2009... not sure if the dreaded 'credit crunch' is slowing it down though...

Just to give you a bit more info (though it seems you've made your mind up :) ), I think it will probably cost between $10 + $15 dollars each 'trip' in the taxi (depending where you go on the strip), meaning if you go to the strip in the morning, then come back later in the day, then go out again in the evening, then come back from your evening out, that will cost you $50'ish for the day in taxi fares ~ £35(?)

I've only been up near the strat once though to be honest (not much that interested us around there but we had a nice meal up at the top and a look around, before heading downtown).

Just don't wanna see you guys narked cos you're sat in traffic on the strip all the time (or you're getting propelled over speedbumps at 100mph as they take the backstreet routes :rotfl: )

Thanks for the info. Its only cost £200 for the hotel and at the moment, a lot of hotels haven't got there prices this far in advance. I'll stick with what I got for now however if nearer time a more central hotel comes up thats just as good value I'll just change it either through expedia or just cut my losses and run! We were planning on getting married out there so it would be nice to have a little luxury but can't be too choosy on a budget.

God knows what it was they were building it was on the opposite side of the strip from MGM.......LOOKED MASSIVE but I'm sure the taxi driver said it was a hotel but I maybe wrong.

There's a medium-sized convention (50,000) the 18th to 20th, so room rates for the 17th, 18th and 19th are quite a bit higher than the Sunday-Tuesday of the weeks before and after...just in case that makes a difference.

    Thanks Ferf

Think I may go with May 5th -15th in that case it will still be nice and hot
As we will be travelling to LGW the night before by train then we cant travel up on a sunday as train times are pants so we will have to go on the Mon which means a Tuesday flight because we have to think of coming back as well.....we need to come back into the country on a Fri or Sat because again train times home on a Sun will again be limited....so that will work out nicely
Travel up to Gatwick on 4th May,fly out to vegas on 5th.....return flight on Fri 15th land on Sat and train home on 16th........sorted

If you want to keep prices down by avoiding mid -strip take a look at the Orleans. It's off strip but runs a free frequent shuttle to the Strip. It's a nice hotel, good pool. loads of eating choices from buffet/coffee shop to a nice steak place and an oyster bar but at more reasonable prices than the Strip. Also has a multiplex cinema and a 70 lane ten pin bowling centre as well as a showroom (mainly retro big names like Neil Sedaka, The Osmonds, Four Tops that kind of act) Rooms are huge with a seperate sofa/sitting area. Personally I'd always choose it over the Strat. I've seen rates as low as $25 recently there and I've never paid more than $80 for a peak weekend night there. Take a look at the reviews on www.tripadvisor.com and compare the two-you may find it interesting.

I have no idea where you are looking at prices but most hotels have the prices overa year in advance though the really good offers usually come in within 12 weeks of arrival. The smart thing to do is book a room direct with the hotel and you only pay the first night as a deposit and that is fully refundable and then look for an offer within teh 12 weeks, this is why it is smart to book the hotel and the flight seperatly. We have just had 6 nights at Venetian (over a weekend) for about £350ish, using this process we probably could ahve stayed at EXcalibur for around £130 - £150 and around £200 ish at Luxor.

Yes its (the hotel) cheap but the holiday is not cheap so it does not really make sense to me to skimp by staying at a poor hotel in an even worse location this wil cost you in the long run both in time waiting for cabs or worse for the deuce and in money for the transport. I honestly hope that you are happy with your choice and the only reason I give advice is to hopefully make other peoples trips better and I of course have no problem if you dont want to take my advice wht so ever as long as I feel I have enlightened you to what to expect.

Oh just one idea if you budget is that tight why not split your hotel spend a few nighst downtoen Binions for example cheap as chips but right on Fremont street OK the actual hotel is on a par with Strat but the downtown experince is fun and everything from table limits to drinks to food is much cheaper than the Strip and the Strat for that matter and use the money that you save to stay at a better location on the Strip.

I am sorry Duchy but in my opinion Orleans is no better a bet than Stratosphere it is a locals casino and whilst it may be OK for the Vegas veteran its not a good place for a first time trip, its just not Vegas. I found the crowd in there at weekends downtrodden locals (similar to Palace statio) and the casino dull the only saving grace is the free shuttle but it does not run 24/7.

The Orleans rooms are very nice. They have some nice restaurants too.

I'd choose Orleans over the Stratosphere every time. I don't think you really need to stay on the strip for a first trip to get the true feeling of Vegas. Just my opinion.
