Thanks Sew109, whilst in Laughlin we actually want to spend a few days with nothing to do but shop, sit in the sun and let the children unwind, but if you think it will be too much we can reduce it as nothing is booked yet. I just wanted a few days R&R before heading home. As for Yosemite I'm going to book one night but we are leaving 2/3 nights free so we can stay longer if we want. Do you think 4 nights in Vegas is too much? We are going to go to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, drive out to the Valley of Fire State Park and the Bonnie Springs Ranch. Can you think of anything of else we might enjoy?

    Thanks

Just a quick reply from me,

4 days in Laughlin is to much, IMO I would miss it out altogher and spend 3 extra days in Vegas...you can stay nearly as cheap at the mo.

Then add the other day onto Yosemite...1 day is not enough, but the lodges in the park itself get booked up a long way in advance, so best to book early.

Red rock canyon, Go karts for the kids are great in Vegas and very cheap. http://www.lvmgp.com/

http://www.lvms.com/ There may be some motor sport on here while you are there if you like motorsport.

We love to go and see the las vegas wranglers ice hockey at the Orleans arena ( season may be over tho) may be other things on there tho. http://www.orleansarena.com/

Anyone there for mar 28th...the monster truck world final is on at the sam boyd stadium....FANTASTIC event

I have just been flicking through the sites again and my flight with Virgin is £493 from London Gatwick do you think i should book now or do you think this price will come down its on the Aprils 8th to 13th. The hotel prices i have found are £319 Treasure Island, Mirage £449. They are non refundable i think they are on cityandshow.com. Do think that i would get better deals nearer the time? I'm so confuesed with booking holidays and i don't no if i want to take the chance on waiting. The Virgin flight was cheaper a few days ago so i'm thinking they are going up.

Have you checked all the links for hotel deals, fatwallet etc, no need to worry about waiting for hotel deals..they are desperate at the mo.

fatwallet etc, I wouldnt book those prices because they are non refundable, and I wouldnt fly with Virgin on that route again, but can understand why you would because of the direct flight. I live oin Norwich so I also have to get to London and back, so I am flying from Norwich this year via amsterdam, for £330 with KLM.

we did 4 nights there in June :) was perfect location (for us) -- however didn't notice any free wifi... is this a new thing? :)

oh yeah, and tripadvisor warns you of the lifts if i remember rightly... they are so right! we thought it was an exageration but we did wait 10minutes once and decided just to walk down in the end (23rd floor!! ARGH!) unless you are in the 'executive area' or whatever they call it (floors 20 -> 24??), then try to get a low floor unless you're really desperate for a view (and even then there's not much to view :) just 'city' :) ) - having said all that, if you are in the executive area, it's worth it just to fill your boots in the 'lounge' area (breakfast, hot and cold snacks, free drinks etc etc)

    Hi there,

great stuff!!! Yeah we choose the hotel for closeness to touristy bits, universal studios, not tooooo far from LAX and not to far to SAnta Clarita for Six Flags!!! :):)

We are staying on the executive floor as read the reviews about the lift. I believe there is free wifi there :) Maybe i have to pay for it actually, not to sure now!!! :D

anyone got any tips on other things to do in vegas as per my post back a page or 2?

Any suggestions on best place to stay for a family
    Orlando :D;)
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
  • Just a heads up, I've just booked a cheap week away in November next year.

£1095 for 2 for 8 nights at the statosphere with Virgin Atlantic flights going direct direct and premium view room. Expedia have got an offer on at the moment for where you get 50% off a stay over 4 nights. :j

I'm thinking this is a good deal so booked it anyway, but can anyone confirm?!

The hotel was just £221 with the upgraded rom, and flights were the expensive part of about £430 each damn that virgin monopoly

If you can change your hotel do so ! Whilst the Stratosphere is not as bad as it was but is still not great but the location is terrible whilst it is on the Las Vegas Blvd it is not actually on the Strip it is in Las Vegas and not Clarke County (where the Strip is). If you need a budget hotel on the Strip choose Excalibur as it is fine and has a decent location and yes it will be more expensive but worth every penny and some, the Americans joke that Brits all stay at Startosphere and Circus Circus and can not understand why, 8 nights at Stratosphere will drive you nuts.

I prefer indirect and always fly with United I think that they are great and for $350 per year you and a travelling companion get upgarded at time of booking to Economy Plus which is there enhanced economy its not as good as Virgin Economy Plus but same seat and food as economy but you get 5" of extra legroom. I would not fly economy with Virgin if it was free but i understand that many people do like it.

As far as the entertainment goes there are somtimes problems with this with all airlines you can easily get round it by buying an Archos I have had mine 4 years and bought the wofe one for Xmas 2 years ago brilliant piece of kit and if you get refurb form ebay can cost less than an Ipod.

Oh as far as the hotel goes book direct with the hotel these are fully refundable (unless stated) and you can cancel and change when the deals come out nearer the time with no penalty. Be aware that TI has just been sold so whilst I dont expect any actual changes they will not be spending any money there unless they really have no choice. Mirage is nicer choice anyway all the rooms have been upgarded great pool and myself and the wifes favourite place on the Strip. I think that there are some dircet discounts here http://vegasuncovered.wordpress.com/2008/11/23/mirage-las-vegas-volcano-to-open-8th-december-2009-great-deals/

  • OK, since BMI have chopped the direct Vegas service from Manchester, I am about to do the previously unthinkable and book indirect flights. So, just after some opinions on the following options:

    US Airways - Airbus 333/320 - £330
    Continental - Boeing 757/737 - £341
    Air France - Boeing 767 - £342
    Delta - Boeing 767 - £347
    AA - Boeing 763 - £373

Out of these, we have only flown Continental and that was nearly 7 years ago. Just after some opinions from the more regular flyers as to what they would go for.

We have thought about flying from London, but as the direct flights are from Gatwick it will take us nearly 5 hours to get there so not really a viable option. Not prepared to fly Thomas Cook from Manchester as the luggage allowance is far too stingy, so will end up paying a fortune in extra charges.

Any advice / comments would be most appreciated.

We flew continental last year for our honeymoon, albeit to newark, then to vegas all continental, and it was just alright. Having never flown international before.

In flight entertainment was tvs mounted every couple of seats, one of them above us was green and didn't work. Also we had one directly above us which hurt the neck as the other one was too far away to see it!

Headphones were given to you on the first flight but you had to keep them for the next one which we didn't do! One of them also broke whilst using it! LOL!
We asked for Vegetarian meal for the wife and never got one and so wife wasn't best pleased. Leg room ok.

    There ya go!

My first piece of advice is try to get the shortest internal flight that you can the transatlantic flights are so much more commutable we always fly united now as we think they the best and we fly via SFO or LAX which does increase the journey time but we know that the planes will be 777 and thus have in seat entertainment systems and enough loos etc also the configuration is 2-5-2 so we can sit without a stranger next to us and get a window and an aisle which is our preference, most of the 767 I believe are 3-3-3 in economy. We also use the economy plus annual program with United as this gives us an extra 5" of leg room. I have flown with Continental via Houston (777) and they were fine and my parents have flown with US Air and thought that they were very good but many disagree with them, I have flown US Air but not for a few years and not in economy so don’t think that I can comment. AA is hit and miss depending on the plane I flew with them to New York from Stansted and it was probably the oldest plane I have ever been on and it put me off them.

Oh and but some noise reduction headphones they will make the biggest difference to your flilght you can get them from around £30 dont wait for the airport as they are cheaper than the high street but they only sell the expensive ones.
