I wouldn't fly to San Fran to double back on myself unless it was for a stopover. You are basically going an hour (or more) further than you need to.

I have that thing too...I can't see the point myself...though from what I've read on here if you want to fly with Virgin on decent planes out via LA with an internal flight is the way to do it...still haven't quite made myself try it as I much prefer direct flights, but maybe one day.

But I do agree with you - if I've got to connect in general I will connect in a city on the way to my final destination...not past it. :)

winner3131 - my only concern with connecting in Chicago in March would be the potential for snow to cause issues with your flights.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

We have connected in Chicago in November with no problems. March may be different, but they dealt with the weather really well.

I thought it was because they were used to it at that time of year.( I may be wrong.)

They're absolutely set up to cope with snow once it's fallen but it's when it is falling that it can be a worry if it's a particularly heavy snow...I grew up near there and have so far avoided flying into Chicago during the winter months. :) I think December and January are the highest snowfall months, but March is still a good possibility.

If there is an issue with snow, chances are that things will be back to normal a lot quicker than in the UK because it's a lot more common there. I'm just overly cautious, I suppose...a bit paranoid about delays or cancellations.

You're right about the Virgin fleet- they only fly the old and tired 747's direct from London to Vegas, these are shabby and have the old entertainment systems not the AVOD.

They fly 747's and A340's to to LA and San Fran but these have the new entertainment systems and have been refurbed in the last couple of years.

I agree with Ferf, Chicago deals with the weather fine, I was there in December and experienced 6 inches + of snowall the day I was due to fly back, flew out on time with no problem at all.

Yes (well, the exit row seats have them in the armrests and you pull them out to watch), though there can be issues with them working...I only say that to manage your expectations because it seems to be a fairly frequent problem that parts of the plane IFE don't work. I would take back-up entertainment just in case.

To be fair, I've been on flights with several carriers and problems with the IFE seem to be relatively common...just seems that more seats are affected on the Virgin planes when there is an issue...we've been lucky and not had problems on Virgin ourselves.

I'm praying for a seat for OH with a working tv too (I'll be reading most of the flight so I'm not bothered).
I'm quite pleased with myself today as noticed that one of my mgm nights went down $40, so I called and got them to change to the lower rate. The other 2 nights have gone up $250  between them, so I'm doubly smug :D
