The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

I got rejected for a nationwide account. There is no TC commission charge from travelex, and they guarentee the best exchange rate, plus the buy back. And finally TC's are insured against loss and theft and i'm taking £1750 so rather do that then cash. Plus I may not even need them.

I will get the TC in USD from travelex, then convert them for free 1:1 to real USD in a designated location (there are a few banks that do it for free in the states)

Finally the I will take £500 in cash because if i lose that and convert TC to cash, I want to be able to buyback the cash too :)

    You have confused me.

All TC have a commission charge when you purchase them, but i can understand why you would rather take them than cash. I have just thought that, as it is the US I am not sure if they even apreciate changing sterling (cash) over there.

As to your second point everywhere (almost) accepts TC as cash and will give you the change, ie if you are making a purchase for $10 and use a $100 cheque. so you have no worries there. All casino cages will change the cheques for you,(no charge), when I used to take cheques they didnt even ask for ID, they will if making a purchase in a store though.

It was your last point that I got lost, what do you mean by buying back the cash?

When I bought thru CCE, I got exactly the same rate on TC as cash, with no visible commission.....presumably the commission charge is wrapped up in their margin on the exchange rate.

Was Amex $$$$ with a selection of $50s and $100s.

If you are taking cash, why not take all cash and save on the TC commision charge when buying them, better still open a nationwide account and get the debit card, but its great that you have now got the PO CC. If you do take cash and Tc why not use the TC first and then no need to cahnge anything back

how long does it usually take to get the nationwide debit caerd??

Ok I have a £3200 credit limit, more than enough..

    So... I'm planning on:

    £500 in cash
    £1750 in travellers cheques
£750 left behind in my account used to pay off credit card next month.

That way I can use credit card for food and entertainment for 17 days, and it should be around the £750 mark but I can use internet banking to check and keep tabs while I'm there...

The £500 cash is starter cash and poker... then if I lose it all I have the travellers cheques to top up my bankroll, and if not then I don't have to touch them.

Finally using travelex, spend £3.50 to get buyback on the cash and travellers cheques, and also get them to price match somewhere higher so the $ is cheaper but I get the buyback option!

    Sound good? All so complicated!

I have acredit and debit card with me and a Lloyds bank Travel card but these are really for only what I cant use cash for or as backup. I only take cash to spend and take outr what I need for that day and leave the rest in the safe at the hotel. I get my currency at work so I get a better rate and no commisson , I have found travellers cheques to be a pain if they did $500 ones I may be tempted to take a few.

Just to explain.. when i say take £500, I mean take £500 worth of dollars, exchanged using travelex.

Same with travellers cheques but £1750 worth of USD travellers cheques. Travelex take NO comission and give same rate as cash.

Now for £3.50, travelex say convertnig the money back into £ from $ when you come back from holiday, they'll give you teh same rate. Most places will give about 1.93 going out and 2.01 coming back so you lose out. This way I'd get the same going out as coming back :)

So if I lost $1000 cash, used $500 travellers cheques for chips, doubled up to $1000 cash.. i could convert the $1000 into £ using the same exchange rate and not lose out :)

    complicated but it works.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like the CC Steakhouse. I found it very overrated as my steak wasn't very good.
