Am I right in thinking you can also use those cards at all the hotel shops and also when you dine in any of the hotels

Are you talking about players cards? they have no cash value and they are slotclub/casino cards. I am not sure exactly what you mean but my answer would be no

It depends on the card, but for the HET Total Rewards card (see stoneman's post for list of hotel/casinos) - yes...each point on your card is worth $0.01...so if you have 1,000 points you have $10 in comps. Whether you can use the card directly at the shop or restaurant depends on which one. In some cases, yes, in other cases you have to go to the Total Rewards booth to get a comp slip. In a very few cases HET doesn't own the restaurant so you cannot use comps to pay for a meal there - but you can charge it to your room if you are staying at one of their casinos and use your comps to pay for it at the end of your stay.

One other thing - if, say, you use your points to pay for a Paris breakfast buffet - one of the places you just hand over your card to pay, they deduct the price of the buffet before tax from your card. So you save the tax you would have paid if paying with cash, credit card or charging to your room.

As far as I know, MGM doesn't work this way - you have to go to the players club booth to ask for a voucher...their system is much more confusing, I think...at least with HET you can put your card in any machine and see exactly what you have to use in comps.

becksta - further to stoneman's point about signing up at one of the casios with a group, each may have different freebies for signing up...so it can pay to choose where to sign up.

For example, according to www.advantageplayer.com the different freebies for their casinos are:

Bellagio$10 machine play at 1000 pts, buffet for two at 2000 pts
Excalibur Hotel and CasinonothingLuxor Hotel and CasinoT-shirt after earning 200 pointsMonte Carlo Resort and CasinonothingNew York-New York Hotel & Casinoearning 100 points generates a T-shirtMandalay Bay Resort & Casinoafter earning 1,500 points one will receive two buffets and $10 addedplayMirageearning 1,000 points (play must be at The Mirage) yeilds two buffets
Now it takes quite a lot of play to get to 1000 points or more - so it may not be worth bothering with choosing one or the other - but sometimes it does.

Also, a lot of clubs offer freeplay to new sign-ups...sometimes even more if you give them your email address.

Wynn has a promo at the moment for a free spin on a wheel to win an amount of freeplay, show tickets, etc.

I did it a week last Saturday, I would most definitely advise against it, the 'West Rim' is not the Grand Canyon proper, it's not even the Colorado. It is overly expensive for what you get and is basically the Hulalapai tribe fleecing you for every penny. Go to the South Rim, which is in the Grand Canyon National Park. Look on Trip advisor for more info about 'Grand Canyon West'

I'm looking for a trip to Grand Canyon but I'm confused on which is better. The above post says that the West Rim is not worth it however I really want to go on a helicopter trip and not a bus or coach trip, and I do want to see the most amazing parts of the Grand Canyon.

I had a look at the prices for the south rim and they seem to be the same price as the west rim (see below).

    South Rim - http://www.viator.com/tours/Las-Vegas/Grand-Canyon-South-Rim-Air-and-Ground-Tour/d684-3511_A0001

    West Rim - http://www.viator.com/tours/Grand-Canyon-National-Park/Grand-Canyon-All-American-Helicopter-Tour/d815-2280AAHT

Does anyone know any direct links to specific tours which are good?

    Thanks

The Venetian players card Club Grazie has promotions on for new members, slot points

    http://www.venetian.com/TRIPREWARDS.aspx

depending on how many points you have earned on your first trip, you can choose 1 item from that point level as a bonus, the points are not deducted from your balance.

they also had an offer a couple of weeks back while I was there, to get your room/suite free for the night with 1000 points, not sure if that promotion is still on.

The South Rim tour is 7 hours (including a 2.5 hour bus tour of the South Rim), the West Rim is 3.5...it is farther to the South Rim but not that much farther by air...but about the same price as you said...as has been mentioned, the area around the West Rim is Native American reservation land - so my guess is that they expect a good amount from the tour operator in order to land in the area which would explain the price being a lot higher for a shorter tour.

As has been mentioned, most reports of the West Rim indicate that it's quite expensive for what you get. The South Rim is the rim where most of the photos you've seen have been taken.

We're driving in October so I can't comment on heli-tours
