PS: After doing some searches on the tripadvisor, I notice opinions are clearly divided on this hotel switch and some people do feel stronly against it. But as with everything else, we all look for different things when we travel!!

I completely agree...we prefer to stay put in one room for the duration, but normally double book a new hotel at a great rate for one night - just to try it out - but we don't check out of our main room. To us moving would be a hassle we don't want to bother with - knowing that we've got to pack up and move would be a bit of a downer to us even if the time involved is minimal. We rarely know what we will be doing much in advance and wouldn't want to feel like we had to leave somewhere we were having fun to sort out a new room...plus so far, with the exception of Wynn, we haven't preferred any of the rooms we have tried to our normal home base...but plenty of others love the variety of staying more than one place.

It's really down to personal preference like anything else.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

    Hi Photome,
Good to see you back with us. I can sympathise with the Vegas blues - they are the worst arent they? It always takes me at least a month to cheer up. I always find that talking/writing about Vegas makes it a little easier though - good news that you may be going back again next year though!

I know you have given me advice before on the Orleans, but can I ask you some more questions?

    1) I have found what I thought is a good deal for Orleans for 9 nights (29/6 - 8/7) for £268 (average of £29 per night) on Expedia - this beats their own rate (I know I could have used the price match, but I only found that out after the event - doh!)
Do you think this is a good deal?
I have been checking fat wallet/vegas hotel hunt et all for a couple of months now, but no deals for Orleans have been released as far as I can see....

2)I have read that the newest tower (the third)was built in 2004 - so I would presume this would be the nicest - do you know which one this is - ie when I check in shall I just aske for the "newest tower" or does it have a name and do you know if they have a strip view, or does the newer room mean its the mountains/nothing?

    3) I am an avid Trip Advisor reader and have probably read nearly all the reviews on The Orleans - a few mention bed bugs which would absolutely RUIN the holiday for me - any opinion on the cleanliness at Orleans?

Anyone else's comments would be more than welcomed too.

Really hope that you get a chance/perk up enough to write your trip report Photome - hope you dont mind me asking the questions - if so, just ignore me!
    Steff ;)

Hi Steff, £29 a night for any hotel is a good deal in my opinion, you may have got better if you waited but you may not.

I am not sure about a new tower, i never stayed before 2004, but there isnt a seperate tower there, (if looking from the air you would see a T shape) the rooms are in 3 wings. I have been there twice, the first time the $20 trick didnt work so the second time I didnt bother. I had a room overlooking the pool the first time (quite high) which was nice and this time we looked on to the strip on the 14th floor, again we were happy. the rooms are basic compared to some on the strip but you get a coffee maker in the room (supposed to be a $5 resort fee but we didnt get charged) and the bathrooms have an opening window in them. you also get a small sofa. I like it there (but we do have a car) and the pool wasnt crowded like some we went to this year. The buffet is good and cheap tue night is T bone steak night $13.95 great steak it was to. Have not had any problems with cleanliness.

Another plus is both times we stayed there we have checked in before 10am and the room has been ready and with minimal wait at check in.

well home again , had really good holiday and a excellent stay in Vegas .

however i will never fly on that heap of a 747, Virgin Atlantic have the nerve to call a " great start to your holiday". honestly i will go indirect or more likely tack a day onto a trip and fly into LAX , rather than subject myself to the most miserable flight i have ever taken again. it not just the seat configuration , the seat pitch is terrible , the seats are so uncomfortable and coming apart , they could not get the in seat entertainment working for half of economy , had a hours wait to check in at McCarren despite arriving in good time , and when i dared to go ask for a glass of water the staff acted like i should not be distrubing them.

yet the flight into LAX with Virgin was great . new plane , lovely seats , on demand entertainment ( which you can also pause , rewind ect) , everything your trans Atlantic flight should be , and everything the Las Vegas to Gatwick flight is not.  . the hours into LAX just melted away , the flight home was like 40 miles of rough road. it was like 2 different airlines .

can some airline please come and take Virgin on like for like on this route , because Virgin sure need a firework up the backside , in the mean time i am posting a warning on the guide about the poor quality of this flight. maybe i should e mail them that , along with the fact the this thread seems sure to have 100,000 hits before xmas . wake up beardy branson there are a long line of unhappy consumers just waiting for the chance to be wooed by a rival.

Caesars was tremendous though , and $20 trick worked wonders as we got upgraded to the Augustus tower :T :D , 3x size of the room we booked . without doubt now my favorite Vegas property.

went to see Defending the Caveman , Le Reve , Mysterie , and David Copperfield.

will post a bit more later , ;) as i want to watch 2nd half of Villa v Everton

oh trets - i'm going on the Gatwick one soon :( disaster

been quoted £300 p/person to upgrade to PE (one way - outbound) so may just bite the bullet and go for it... (not fussed about way back - hopefully will just fall asleep fingers crossed)

    was it a busy flight?

    NoNoNoNo!!
You need to do it the other way around. you are on a night flight back and try sleeping upright for the duration and your a*** will feel like it's on fire.
you can upgrade at check in, cost is £275
Trets, now you see why I don't use them anymore, bl**dy disgrace they are. How they have the nerve to charge what they do for that flight beggars belief.
We went with AA and to be honest economy is about the same, but with no personal IFE. Now buisness is something else, and way cheaper than PE with Virgin
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

Last trip was with AA, you are allowed 2x23KG for the hold, + 1x18KG and a personal item for the cabin, mind you shoud see the Americans, they bring all sorts on, and the staff just shove it in anywhere they can (can you imagine any British carrier doing that) and best of all you can take a set of golf clubs where you can shove up to 70lb. of anything you like into, and this is the same for economy and buisness.

every seat filled in economy, and thats the problem, if you live down south the only way to go direct is Virgin. they have a capitive market , meaning they can serve up a really crap product and still fill the plane most of the time.

if you live up North your limted to a few flights a week . i can get to both living in the midlands , and would have taken BMI anyday over Virgin but the prices are so high most of the time because you have every Vegas want away north of Birmingham looking at a few 100 seats a week.

i thought when the open skies thing kicked off we would see a new player on this route , but as yet nothing .

the best advice i can give is get something with a aisle seat and near the front on the way out , and then think about upgrading on way way home. they were selling PE seats at McCarran check in for £275. it wasw the worst flight i have ever had the 1st time i took it, todays misery fest ( with extra turblulence) topped it

yep , it just seemed like the best option when i booked , you forget how bad it actually was , and say "10 hours isn't really a long time is it". today it felt a hell of a long time.

i really wish i had just booked my flight in and out of LAX . Virgin have had there last "Bucket and Spade" fare out of me , and there is no shortage of compertion into LAX, so i may well look to others in the future just to spite them. my only satisfaction is that we did not pay too much for the whole fare.
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
