Had to pop down to Mr T's Metro this morning to get veggies for the weekend; came to £6.00, so much cheaper than the local inconvenience store! Next fortnightly shop is for delivery on Wednesday and hope to keep it to around £70.

Firstly, thanks to the person who thanked my DH for his meatball recipe. He was glowing with pride when I read your post out to him and suggested that ishould tell you all about his homemade veggie burger and chips that he made to use everything up last night. Another time perhaps!

I have managed not to spend any more on groceries since the big spend on Wednesday morning but I've given DH the go-ahead to call at the farm shop for his sausages and some local milk (cheaper than the supermarkets). I only seem to have turkey and stewing steak left in the freezer, meat-wise, apart from a piece of pork for tomorrow's lunch so I might end up buying some free range chicken breasts for a stir-fry before the month is out. Any ideas for using stewing steak other than the casseroles?

I've ended up working 4 out of 5 days this week through an agency, and we've noticed the difference in terms of household tidiness and our evening meals. DS asked yesterday if I thought I might be able to make some homemade biscuits again if I'm not busy this week. (Those hobnobs were a hit!) At least with a full three days' pay due to hit the bank account next week the pressure is off a little, although DH is all in favour of me continuing to be strict about the budget as we have a long way to go.

It sounds as though everyone's doing great with the GC and it's already becoming a life change for lots of others too.

Week 3 Update and I am still under budget. Bill was a little higher this week but I needed things like soap powder and shampoo. I ordered online and used free delivery voucher so that has saved me a 10 mile round trip and the danger of impulse buying!

Think I need a petrol challenge next as I put £50 in my tank last week and the fuel light is on again!! I do alot of miles in my job but I don't think I am driving very efficiently so am off to find out any tips on improving my driving technique. I am also cutting out any unneccesary trips and trying to plan my journeys better.
But these things take time, I know that I'm, the most inept that ever stepped.
  • Hi guys

Spent £6.84 on Thurs, (have already updated sig) friend came to visit, i was being really good, planning lunch ahead. however had a major drama at work and got called in, forgot to take meals out of the freezer, so had to pop to sainsburys. I was so gutted. Tho spending under £7 in a supermarket is unheard of, so kind of proud of myself. £17 left til payday and shouldn't need to buy anything except small amount of veg. So hopefully still on track.

Also I'm not great at the cooking thing, could anyone give me any recipe ideas, i have a few carrots, leeks, swede, red onion, and peppers. i dont want to waste them, which is what i would have done in the past, and only cooking for one so something that can be frozen. any ideas gratefully welcomed.

I now have £66.54 left in the budget with £57.60 coming out over the rest of the month (2 organic box deliveries and putting by some money for a costco shop later in the year) I will have only £8.94 left for milk etc. I think I had better crack open the powdered milk!

You could prep and freeze all the veg for using later, or how about oven roasting some of the veg with olive oil dribbled over and some herbs added, or make a soup up - just peel, chunk and put veg into a large saucepan or slow cooker cover with 1.5 pts stock and simmer until tender, process until smooth and pop back into pan, add a knob of butter and a splash of milk and season to taste, eat a portion and freeze the rest.

    Hya folks

I haven't posted here for a while, though I have been lurking and catching up with some of the many posts.

It has been a funny week spending-wise, I managed to get to Aldis yesterday...their veg deals are amazing...a lovely big savoy cabbage for only 39p! I also got their dark instant hot chocolate for DS1 for 69p...a great hit! I had two big carrier bags-full (bags for life ones) for less than £10! At the moment, their milk (4pints) is less than Mr T and Morrisons...so will uses them again.

I have updated my sig with all this week's spending...getting close to the month total already with just over a week to go...can I keep to it this next week, I doubt it.

I have had to get a big bag of dried dog-food (£16.99) as well as quite a few BOGOFFs and half-price deals, so have stocked up. I at last found Stardrops in Morrisons in Evesham on Wednesday. The one in Tewkesbury hasn't had it for months and neither has Savers. DH got the last lot from Wilkinsons in Cheltenham. We have gone through quite a bit lately as we have been working our way around the house, cleaning in all those yucky nooks and crannies. Stardrops is wonderful for cutting through grease and grime.

As to all those considering getting a sc. I got mine from Amazon ( Morphy Richards 48715 6.5 Litre Oval Slow Cooker) for £19, reduced down from £34.99! It was the best one in the latest Which? survey, and is huge! I have only done a chicken in it so far, but it was wonderful.

    Have a good weekend everyone

    M

  • I'm up to £152.78 for my spending so far this month. This leaves me with £47.22 to last until the 31st.

I've put my menu plan on my blog this week, mainly so that I stick to it. Last week we went a bit off track. I've also posted some costings of some of the food I buy. I'm looking for help in reducing my costs even further.
