Stopped using Pay at pump a few years ago. It's actually no quicker and the only Pay at pump only stations near me are Asda, so I don't use them. OP, go somewhere else. If enough people do that, then they might change the system.
It's obviously quicker, don't be daft. 'Enough people' won't do that because convenience is king.
It just isn't noticeably quicker, and I see plenty of people faffing around at the pumps making it slower for them and everyone else waiting behind them. It should be quicker, but I find it isn't. Maybe someone should do some field tests.

This is the process at my local Tesco's -

Pay at pump - Put pump into petrol slot in car. Press pay at pump. Insert or scan Clubcard, wait for machine to recognise it. Insert payment card. Insert PIN, Wait for machine to grant you access to fuel. Fill up car. Replace pump. Press receipt required. Wait for receipt to print out. Ge back in car, drive off.

Pay at kiosk - Put pump in petrol slot in car. Press pay at kiosk. Pump Authorised. Fill up car. Replace pump. Go to kiosk. Queue if busy (don't go to petrol station when it's busy). Tell them which pump, scan Clubcard, scan payment card, receipt printed out. Get back in car, drive off.

The entering PIN and authorisation at the pump is the bit that slows down the pay at pump, the potential queueing at kiosk would slow that method. I reckon it's as long as it is tall.

I don't think it is as long as it is tall as you're clearly biased. Notice how you elect to use the word 'wait' three times in the pay at pump option but not once for the pay at kiosk option?

Or how you included 'wait for machine to grant you access to fuel' while paying at the pump (how many milliseconds does that usually take?) but when referring to the actual noticeable delay in waiting for the kiosk staff to gaze into the forecourt, see you standing aimlessly by your car, pump in hand before they manually click authorise, you plainly describe as 'Pump Authorised.'

Walking to the kiosk alone will take longer than the few seconds spent 'waiting for the machine to recognise your clubcard', 'waiting for the machine to grant you access to fuel' and 'waiting for the receipt to print out' combined.

You talk about plenty of people faffing around at the pumps making it slower (which I agree with, people seem to take an eternity to find their wallets, then another eternity finding their cards), but it's no different to waiting behind someone doing the same thing at a kiosk counter. If you happen to go when the petrol station isn't busy, then presumably you wouldn't need to queue behind someone faffing around trying to pay at the pump either...

I really don't think anyone needs to do any field tests on this...

I think your personal bias is skewing your view here, I use Morrison's Pay at Pump regularly, there is never a lot of waiting, it is vastly quicker than using the till. I regularly arrive after someone else, fill up and leave before they have made it back to their car.

My version of your process would be
Pay at pump: Put card in machine, start unscrewing secondary fuel cap, enter PIN at same time (I have two hands), machine authorises for £120, lift pump and fill vehicle, when complete return pump to holder, press receipt button, refit fuel cover, pull receipt from slot, get in car and drive off.
Pay at till: Press "Pay at till", start unscrewing secondary fuel cap, wait for for pump to be authorised (sometimes instant, other times over a minute, depending on how attentive the staff member is being), lift pump whilst waiting, insert nozzle and fill vehicle, when complete return to pump holder, refit fuel cover, walk into shop, queue (sometimes only person other times behind several people and at least one of them will be confused by the entire concept of having to pay for petrol, pay, get receipt, walk back to car, get in and drive off.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to refuel?

I'm a pensioner - I have all the time in the world - no need to rush at all.

Have you the ability to use the 'Pay at pumps' though?

Don't forget the people who decide to do their weekly shop, or those who decide the best time to work out the pump number is at the point they're at the till being asked, or people being upsold on sausage rolls or cigarettes, etc.

Hey! Shouldn't you be out driving at 15mph on 30mph roads? It's lunchtime!

Sadly now having a EV. Can't have the fun of watching the driver behind chomping at the bit while you walk slowly into shop & have a natter with person behind till before walking out again. 🤣

    I've just paid-at-pump at Sainsbury. 50 litres, so not just a splash-and-dash.

When I pulled up to the pump, the driver of the car at the pump in front was in the kiosk. When I left, they were still in there. At least, I presume they were.

There is a big label right next to the card reader saying a £100 temporary hold will be put on the card.

Probably buying a pint of milk, some sweets and a paper while they are there.

I am not in a rush, however I do not see the point in wasting time doing something that can be done quicker and easier, with no additional effort.

Surely you have things you would rather be doing than pointlessly queueing in a petrol station queue though?
