I don't see how that helps. They will still pre-authorise £120 even if you only want half a tank of fuel.No it won’t stop the preauthorisation. But it will stop the OP panicking about running out of petrol as per their initial post“I wouldn’t have been able to get any petrol. I could have broken down.”
just suggesting alternatives. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.2 -
I'm not a pensioner but another driver and I found it confusing when we tried to fill up at a Morrisons that's 'pay at pump' only. Not wanting to hold up a long queue, I gave up and went to another garage.0

What's the relevance of being a pensioner?4

Just like not using self service tills in store.1

So once you are there it's either get on with it or leave drive back round the main roundabout to the store and queue again for a different pump (assume the pay in kiosk pumps are the other side but I don't acuallyy know)
I'm mostly surprised OP had never seen or experienced this before at any supermarket petrol station when it has been around for so long

Stopped using Pay at pump a few years ago. It's actually no quicker and the only Pay at pump only stations near me are Asda, so I don't use them. OP, go somewhere else. If enough people do that, then they might change the system.0

Not sure why the system should be changed. It is more efficient IMO to pay at the pump and I haven't(so far) had any problem with it other than the occasional machine not being able to print a receipt.1

As a aside to this. Morrisons only own 4 petrol sites now, having sold the rest to Motor Fuel Group (MFG) in a £2.5Billion deal.Life in the slow lane0
