Any advice on the best way to transfer money between a US bank and my UK bank?

I was able to. Taking a selfie to match my passport photo took forever. But as Wise asked me to get the bank to set up a wire transfer (yes, makes little sense to me) I decided it's easier to just get ask my bank to wire it to me directly (which last time I found difficult, too many hoops. I can't even access my US bank online because it requires the software to phone my mobile and it can't cope with a UK number. Stupid.
That's strange, if you have the Wise USD account (separate from the default GBP account) it gives you ACH details you can make the transfer to.

I'm giving up I think, both Instarem and Wise are giving me a hard time about photos of passport and selfy. After struggling, especially with the selfies, they finally accept them. And then later saying they still need them.

Try another device e.g., a tablet rather than a phone.

Did what I should have done in the first place, direct wire transfer. Last time I tried I was in hospital recovering from a failed cancer surgery and it was very difficult. This time I thought I'd lost a piece of vital information, a pin number, but finally found it. Thanks for all the help, sorry for wasting your time.

No time wasted - folks just trying to understand the particular situation in order to try and help.  Sorry to hear of your health challenges.
