I've just joined the waiting game, so comments on this thread are useful and I've read with interest!

Tax return submitted on Friday (was waiting for a document so couldn't submit before then). I know I'm owed tax back because of a major pension contribution. This morning I got notification of a change in tax code to a lower number, so that's very quick and I assume automatic? Reason is expenses - I mostly work from home but do some travel. 22-23 the travel involved London, 23-24 it was Birmingham. And they are VERY different in terms of costs.

Repayment is pending, but I assume that doesn't mean much at this stage!
A tax code to a lower number means more tax will be paid. I doubt this is liked to your return within that time frame.
Then why else would they have changed it? How else would they know? They don't get the information from anyone else, only through my tax return.
    Bank interest?

Benefit in Kind inormation from employer?

Fair enough - I guess that your return was relatively straightforward and processed immediately.

Yes, I do have a relatively straightforward return. Income all from same employer (who have already taken some tax but don't deal with any expenses), then I claim expenses, inform of interest payments (low as I'm being tax efficient), and charity donations. Finally add in the pension contribution, which is where the refund comes from. And that's pretty much it!

Bank interest - I'd have to check, but around £10 for the year. Employer doesn't offer any benefits in kind!

Submitted return on the 6th, confirmed and tax credits released on the 8th april 2024, Requested bank refund on the 8th April 2024, states 10 working days. its now 15th may 2024. All previous years I got the bank repayment issued on the 19th April 2024. within the 10 working days. this year however... they want to make me wait. its not just me a firm of 50 lads sub contractors self employed, only one person out of us all has been given the refund. again no idea why as it was above 3k so these "security checks" are more for the understaffing issue. guarantee thats the issue. not enough people to check the claims if theyre being flagged for additional security checks, which every year they must check the self assesments? even then just pay me back the money im OWED! and if theres a problem im sure they will let you know asap and demand settlement asap or face going to jail, fines etc.

what about my financial loses? I use this money to invest every year, ive missed out on thousands.
personally think we should be able to put in a claim if it takes longer than the 10 working days.

I called a few week back told to wait til end of may 2024. if not in by then it may be a further 10-12 weeks. so August/September.

The last paragraph sums up what some of us who, shall we say, are familiar with the workings of HMRC have been trying to convey.

You were speaking to a call handler who has NO idea when your return will be processed or when a repayment will be issued.

Bear in mind that almost 300000 returns were submitted in the first week - only the last week on January is busier! Some have made errors in their rush to submit and this, together with persistent calling (not you!) only adds to the delay.
Yes, but we live in the year 2024. we are also a first world economy. its unacceptable.
every year ive submitted on the 6th, filed on 8th/9th, had refund in my bank on 19th april
for the last 7 YEARS in a row.

Pending security checks, does not state what the checks are, id just prefer an actual DATE my submission would be checked and confirmed by. its silly saying oh wait til end of may then i call again oh just wait another 12 weeks its a joke.

I would of invested my rebate into my crypto portfolio which would have almost doubled in the last 42 days ive been waiting.

if theres been 300,000 submitted on 6th april and ive waited 42 days so far, it be 7,142 cases per day.
must have atleast 100 staff, so 71 cases per day. easy....
I worked at a BT call centre, 1 centre... 500+ staff id handle 70+ calls a day easily.

HMRC has refunded more than half a billion pounds in overpaid tax from pension savings in just over four years. More than 17,000 people had to claim back overpaid tax on pensions in the third quarter of 2019, with the average claim coming to £3,162. A total of 221,456 people have been forced to reclaim overpaid tax on their pension since 2015.

Please everyone file a complaint today if your in the same boat as myself. I submitted it this morning because i feel like they are doing nothing at all. no updates or messages, letters etc. just a blank VOID of nothingness.

I'm still waiting for 2022/23's overpayment to be refunded...
I have requested it twice but hey ho.
I think I know what the issue is but until HMRC contact me I will wait.
My Australian tax return was so much more straightforward to file. The only issue I had with it was when it was 'delivered' successfully to Mumbai first time round.
I will do this year's this weekend.
How times have slipped from filing one return at 4 minutes past midnight on the 6th of April in the middle of the Outback.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.

That would explain why three different people  at BT were incompetent in dealing with my case , which was only correctly dealt with after a complaint sent direct to the CEO.

So - you reckon that the staff at HMRC call centre processes tax returns? (They don’t)

You believe that processing tax returns is all that HMRC do? You believe that every return submitted contains no errors and requires further explanation? No telephone calls with the millions who don’t prepare tax returns? No reconciliation of the tax paid by the millions who don’t prepare tax returns? No dealing with employer’s returns whatsoever? No issuing of tax codes? No compliance team?
