The 6k of self employed expenses
+ 5k of paye expenses would take your paye tax free allowance to s2350l

For the following year any expenses claimed in the following year if you wouldn't be able to claim a refund as its earned through your tax code

5k of paye expenses is 10k miles and some tools

You don't get 5k you get 20% back from your expenses you declare

That then becomes a tax free allowance for the following year.

I have no idea can't remember seeing it before usually all your earnings go in to your tax code but only my paye expenses did

So 5k paye expense tax code s1867l
    Should be s2476l

    Normal choice is s1257l
£5000 expenses would almost certainly be another reason for additional HMRC scrutiny- where is S2476L coming from?
Self employed expenses would never be included in a tax code though.
Yes - I am just baffled by that response. As you say - only expenses relating to employment can be included in a PAYE code.

How it ‘becomes a tax free allowance for the following year’ is also just beyond anything that I have come across.
22/23 i had PAYE expenses and my tax code was changed to project simular expenses for 23/24 tax year. I had to get it changed back to default as I couldn't predict any expenses going forward. Crazy that HMRC will just assume your expenses will be the same and just give you tax free allowance on that.

That’s PAYE expenses - what other information would HMRC have to go on? A tax code, which you can always alter, is simply an attempt to collect the correct amount of tax.

Gvent was introducing the concept of having self-employed expenses in one’s tax code which simply doesn’t happen.

Approaching the 6 week wait Thursday. I wonder if that will be extended by another 6 to 12 weeks.

Today is 6 weeks for me. I'm going to wait  until end of May before I ask an update. If I did it today I reckon the answer will be security checks and call back in 6 weeks. 😁

I've just joined the waiting game, so comments on this thread are useful and I've read with interest!

Tax return submitted on Friday (was waiting for a document so couldn't submit before then). I know I'm owed tax back because of a major pension contribution. This morning I got notification of a change in tax code to a lower number, so that's very quick and I assume automatic? Reason is expenses - I mostly work from home but do some travel. 22-23 the travel involved London, 23-24 it was Birmingham. And they are VERY different in terms of costs.

Repayment is pending, but I assume that doesn't mean much at this stage!

A tax code to a lower number means more tax will be paid. I doubt this is liked to your return within that time frame.

Then why else would they have changed it? How else would they know? They don't get the information from anyone else, only through my tax return.

Fair enough - I guess that your return was relatively straightforward and processed immediately.
