Pointless exercise, surely? If Think 21 isnt working, how will Think 25 help, given that the legal age to purchase alcohol is 18?

The only time I have ever been asked for ID when buying alcohol was in California when I was (an admittedly young-looking) 30 years old. Apparently that's because they will ask for ID from anyone who looks under 30 (I was later told.). That's because the penalty for selling alcohol to someone under age (I think it's 21 in California) is extremely severe, unlike the wrist-smacking one gets in this country.

This country has descended into a nation of binge drinking youngsters, and whilst nothing is done to stop that rot then I will remain unconvinced that the pressure put onto responsible stores to observe the 'under 21' rule is working.

Yes, there are unscrupulous small store owners who would sell alcohol to a baby, but refusing a sober 20 year old a thimble of mulled wine in M&S whilst Christmas shopping with her mum is doing no more than paying lip service to a law that (allows people of 18 to drink) seemingly upholds a generation to drink to oblivion every night.

the under 21 policy is working,

i wouldnt say the penalty for selling drink to an under 18 is wrist smacking, if i sell alcohol to an under 18 and it turns out to be a test purchaser sent in by the council then i would lose my jobs, face a fine of up to £1,000 and have a criminal record,

Since when was it illegal in the UK to serve a 20 year old with alcohol?

I tihnk the shops feel that think 25 will work better as under 18's can look actually older than they really are eg 17 yo could look 22 and not be asked for ID under the think 21 policy but under the think 25 policy they would get asked for ID, this is my understanding as to why some shops have think 25 or will be implementing it

You could always give the younger person with you one little item to buy themselves and then pretend you don't know them while you are queuing. Mr or Mrs Bod on the till isn't going to notice whether you were shopping together or not.

My big gripe with flippin Tesco checkout staff is why they ask if you're alright with your packing and then when you say you are they ram it all through as fast as they can thus proving that you aren't alright with it after all!

I was fine when I used carrier bags - now we try to be a bit more eco friendly and use our own bags it isn't as easy to pack it all quickly.

Totally absurd rules when they start asking people you are obviously over 65 never mind 18 for ID....
If anyone asks me for ID I just put the goods quietly on the counter and walk away.....and spend my money elsewhere.
    P.S.
    Before anybody starts........I have a bald head a walking stick and look 75 ( but I am only 55 !! )

Well done to supermarkets for starting to tackle underage drinking.

Yep and you may as well sort youself out now if you don't have any ID, as almost all shops are moving to Think 25 in the summer. So if they think you look 25 or under you will get ID'd.

Oh great - I'm nearly 27 and still get asked for ID because of Think 21. If it changes to Think 25 then I'll be in my thirties before I stop getting asked to prove my age! I suppose it is kind of flattering in a way :-)

I know some people who think this is brilliant- my mum (who's 45) and I were in Tescos and were ID'd, the lady said she was sorry, although refering to me (I'm 23) said 'your sister looks under 21' :rotfl:

On a more serious note- my 23 yr old boyfriend was ID'd for a lottery ticket a couple of years ago and we are ID'd in most pubs in town- I think this is becoming more and more common place.

However, has anyone said the benefit to stopping parents doing a weekly shop with their toddler in tow from buying alcohol? I can't see the issue-although I may have missed something as I read the thread.
