Its nothing new all the local stores around me do it.

My local sainsbury shop asks me if im alone if im buying it for myself and Im 30+ I dont go in there now as ive never bought for minors and dont like being questioned at my age - it always makes me feel like ive got a habit when I say yes its for me.

it's generally the uneducated who have this view of shop workers anyway!

    LOL, so true!
  • It doesn't matter what rules are in place - those determined to find a way around them will do so. But that doesn't mean that Tesco and every other retailer should do nothing to attempt to prevent the supply of alcohol to minors.

Why not just worth with the rules? Or if your local preferred store is being over-zealous (in your opinion) then shop somewhere else?

I don't pretend that there are some silly rules around (heaven knows, this particular government seems to have a passion for banning things!), but don't sweat the small stuff. Save your energy for the real battles in life ;)

  • I was ID checked in Canada - I laughed as I am 29 :)

The best way to avoid it is to buy the alcohol abroad - it's cheaper in France anyway lol ( http://www.sainsburyscalais.co.uk/ )

My 35 year old friend was ID'd recently (first time in a long long time). She explained very nicely to the young man that she didnt carry ID but she could show him a picture of her with her 3 kids, the oldest being 17. He laughed and served her.

I dont mind being ID'd (Im 20) but didnt take my wallet the other day when me and my boyfriend did the weekly shop. He was buying a bottle of wine and they refused to serve us as I was there. I understand what they risk (I used to work in a pub) but it is pretty annoying :(

But the rule has no effect whatsoever, as Tesco CS said and another poster you just leave the store and come straight back in again and get sold.

It'sa nothing to do with helping to prevent underage drinking, it's to cover Tescos asses from getting busted/fined/blamed for anything.

It is to do with underage drinking, its a national policy to check people for ID if they look under 21, all supermarkets, pubs, bars do it

nobody seem to care for the poor sales assistant if they do let someone through without checking ID. If they get caught they get fined simple as that
and i doubt anyone on here will be willing to pay the fine.
As for 'OMG im 30 and im getting ID checked'
you will be looking back in 10 years time wishing someone would do that just to make you feel younger :D

can some one tell me when (as a tesco employee) i'm doing my job as per the law/store policy or what ever and you as a customer don't like it i get called a 'jobsworth'? it really pee's me off!
i can't sell alcohol on the pharmacy (it's against the law), but i can refuse drug sales and i always seem to get called a jobsworth.

What do people use for ID anyway?

I don't carry anything that proves my age so if I was asked for ID then I guess it would be no sale.
