Tesco not selling alcohol

I imagine there's a huge Tescos complaint thread, and i imagine this issues been raised before as i saw it in a local paper once it's just never happened to me until now.

Was in town shopping with a friend, popped into the Tesco Metro to pick up some whiskey.

The woman said i couldn't be sold it unless the person with me showed their ID, nothing about my ID, that didn't matter, they needed to see my friends ID. The person was 24 but that's not the issue, even if i took my underage family members along i'd be expected to be sold drink, i always have all my years in that very shop.

I'm absolutely fuming about this, it doesn't make any sense. If i was buying alcohol for a minor i'd make them wait outside.

What about after my friend gets the bus home, am i able to go back to Tescos then? Or is that me disallowed from buying alcohol for the rest of that day incase i'm still buying it for a minor?

maybe the store manager is a little ocver zealous in policy.
however it maybe they are under pressure locally and tbh i would rather that than underage sales

Tesco, like any other retailer with a licence to sell alcohol, are legally not allowed to sell it to you if they suspect you might be buying it with the intention of passing it on to minors. They can also have specific conditions put onto individual stores where they have failed a number of test purchases, and this could be the consequence of that.

Did you ask to speak to a supervisor or manager at all? They should have been able to explain the store policy to you, and apologise if you were unhappy with the service. Are you in an area where there are issues with anti social behaviour/underage drinking? These can make the store extra vigilant when it comes to alcohol sales.

Be thankful that you don't live in Bournville in Birmingham they have the only Tesco store in the UK that does not sell alcohol. Also being a quaker village there aren't any pubs either.

As for being refused alcohol by Tesco, you should have asked to speak to the manager to ask why you were being refused.

I remember reading somewhere that there is a new campain highlighting that buying drink for minors is the same as pushing drugs apparently.

Probably the same people who say smoking weed funds terrorism.

asda morrison and tesco by me all operate this policy, as do the local spar. Its to prevent people from buying alcohol for minors. I think its becoming pretty standard policy now.

Phoned up customer services, i knew it wouldn't come to anything i just felt grr. They explained it is their right not to serve anyone which i know, i told them though that i was unhappy with the service and if it happened again i would go elsewhere.

I asked after being refused how long until i could go back into the store again to buy drink, they said straight away. I told them that didn't make any sense and the lady on the phone pretty much agreed with me but couldn't officialy say that.

So i could have left the store, left my friend outside and came back in then i could have bought drink. I think then they are not responsible if i did give the drink to the person with me and they were underage.

Never happened to me before there or in asda. I don't understand how it prevents it. How many people who buy drink for minors get them to come into the store to the checkouts with them?

My sister was caught out by the alcohol to under 18 rule in Asda just before Christmas. Her daughter is 16 and was going to buy a bottle of wine for her friend for Christmas (who is 18). My sister's full trolley of booze had started to be put through the till when she turned to my neice and said 'You'll have to put that on the belt with mine because they won't serve you'... The till op, stopped putting it all through and told her that she cannot sell any of the booze as she was going to be supplying a minor. After an argument with the checkout supervisor, she left empty handed!!

It made my sister worse when both my mother and myself agreed with Asda!
  • Happened to me as well when I was with my girlfriend. She is 21 but didn't have any id on her. She left the shop and I went back 20 seconds later and was sold. What a stupid rule for Tesco to have. Does it apply to a mother bringing a 4 year old kid through on her weekly shop?

I really despair at the lack of common sense in society these days. If you want to prevent underage drinking, why not have some police visit the usual haunts every 20 minutes and confiscate the stuff.
