Have now started Small Island by Andrea Levy. Good so far.
If you get a chance the National Theatre on screen showing of this is well worth watching.

Jackie I've just started volunteering in a secondhand book shop in a NT property and each day I've worked  I've come home with a book! At least they will go back for resell once I've finished

  • The Shari Lapena book was one of the worst books of hers that I have read! Very disappointing. I returned my library books yesterday so I will start another one on my kindle today.

After the horrors of Shuggie Bain I’ve finished the Crete holiday week with The Pure In Heart by Susan Hill, the second in the Simon Serrailler series. Really good read so hope to find the next one when home.
I really like the Simon Seraillier series.  I'm surprised it's not been turned into a tv series (and probably ruined)

just finished The Lamplighters by Emma Sonex.  I really enjoyed it and find myself thinking about the lives of the lighthouse crews in the past.  It's an intriguing mystery which is fictional but alludes to a true story.

My latest read is Old God's Time by Sebastian Barry.  So far I'm enjoying it.  It's beautifully descriptive and is building at a delightfully slow pace.

I have a ticket for a book signing event tonight in Waterstones in London. Mark Edwards, Lisa Jewell and Victoria Selman will be there.

I think I'm going to keep Kindle Unlimited when the free trial is over as it does seem worth the money.

I have three library books to pick up. I decided to try Where the Crawdads Sing as I keep reading good reviews about it online..

I really enjoyed Where the Crawdads Sings @Wednesday2000 - the film is meant to be very good too although I missed it when it was at the cinema.

I've just finished Small Island by Andrea Levy and will start The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt this evening.

I got a hardback copy of Ballet Shoes and Anne of Green Gables last week in the CS - £1 each. Haven't read either and they are really nice - look unread.

I got some books for my recent birthday: Becoming by Michelle Obama, Friends, Lovers and the big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry plus a book by Anne Cleves and a Victoria Hislop. Also bought another Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway book at the weekend and another by Frieda Macfadden. The last two were in the 3 for £6 deal at The Works. The third book is by a forensic psychologist and will go to DD for her birthday today.

My nightstand is heaving - again!!

  • How have I somehow missed a Reading thread on MSE?? 😮

Massively avid reader here...always got one or two books on the go, plus an audiobook.

Currently I am reading Exodus by Peter F Hamilton and listening to Doppleganger by Naomi Klein. My next listen will be Matthew Perry's autobiography....that will be strange, given his recent passing.

I generally only buy books when they are £0.99, unless they are from a favourite author or something I'm really looking forward to. I'll either buy physical books or mostly ebooks via Kobo.

I look forward to hearing what everyone is reading!

No idea what Lisa Jewell wrote but she shot up in my estimation on twitter when someone commented negatively on a gay character in her books she responded with that was fine because she doesn't write for bigots anyway.  Or words to that effect
I remember years ago when Cassius Clay as he was back then went back home to his home town after winning a gold medal for boxing in the Olympics
He went into a local burger place and the guy wouldn't serve him saying
    " I don't serve N*****s",
    his reply was classic

    "Thats Ok I don't eat them "

He went to the nearby river and threw his gold medal into the river :(

What an amazing chap he was and what an awful thing racism was and sadly still is in the world. Unfortunately bigotry is still rife on many fronts, yet we live in such a wonderful world
