@-taff I'm a fan of Rivers of London and Mark Lawrence books too!
If you like Ben Aaronovitch, I can recommend Paul Cornell London Falling (Shadow Police series). I think this first one is on Prime on Kindle. About to finish book 3, which will be book 19 of the year!Keep reading books!

Sad to hear that Alice Munro has died. She was a Noble Prize winner for literature and wrote some marvellous short stories. One of the (in my mind) top 3 Canadian writers which includes Margaret Atwood and Margaret Laurence.
Apparently a number of her stories/books are available online for free.

Bought Professor Robert Lustig's book, Metabolical on special offer on Amazon. I have a couple of his previous books and he has a very approachable and humorous style. I started reading immediately and I'm finding it explains ultra-processed food better than Chris van Tulleken's book Ultra Processed People, which was so scary that I gave up on it !
I have two achievements to go, on the Kindle Reading Challenge 😁
Husband has had major car trouble, the clutch & crankshaft on his Volvo went, on the M20. Volvo customer service has been brilliant though. I had to group all my book parcels together to arrive today as a consequence because he has been flitting about between Surrey and Canterbury and husband will now see the full extent of my book buying habit.. oh dear..5 -
My new library books.
I have quite a few on reserve including the new Tom Selleck book.

Have just (finally) finished Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - didn't love it tbh although there were some amusing anecdotes. Just felt very long.....
Going to start Where the Crawdads Sing next as it's the work Book Club read for this month.Cross-stitch WIP: Haberdashery Shop Fiver Friday challenge 2025 founding member 😊 Read 25 books in 2025 17/25 Currently reading The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths3 -
Just stumbled upon this thread - so brilliant - thanks @MrsStepford for starting it! Like many others here, I am a lifetime lover of reading (my mum taught me long before starting school, and I remain very grateful for this).
I generally read a mixture of Kindle books and library ebooks (I used to go to libraries a lot but now live rurally so don't have a library down the road any more to borrow physical books) and the odd 2nd-hand purchase. I use Book Bub, which is a mixed blessing as it's introduced me to some brilliant bargains and new authors but also tempts me to buy too many Kindle books! If I treat myself to new physical books nowadays, they are mostly non-fiction (about running, swimming, hiking, birds/wildlife, outdoors in general) when they have nice illustrations and will be enjoyable to browse through repeatedly - and, importantly to smell! I listen to a lot of audiobooks too.
I was a fan of Swallows and Amazons, Narnia, Chalet School, all the horsy books etc when I was young. And one of my favourite authors was Diana Wynne-Jones - especially The Ogre Downstairs about some kids with a magic chemistry set. I also randomly liked a series by Lois Lowry (USA based, mostly written in the 80s) about a girl called Anastasia - I think I identified with her character at the time as she was a little bit geeky and also a fan of reading, among other things!
I read a lot of psychological thrillers, and crime series as long as they're not really hideously gruesome (always interested in a Scandi series). I think I have similar taste to @Wednesday2000 and would also recommend Belinda Bauer. I'm reading a Ruth Ware ebook from the library right now and would recommend her too!
I'm going to visit this thread regularly from now on!4 -
Oh yes I like Ruth Ware too. I have read all of her books.
I just remembered I really liked The Chalet by Catherine Cooper. I just googled that book and it says fans of Ruth Ware would like her too. I might see if there are more books of hers I haven't read. I like books set in winter or cold conditions. Same with films, actually. I'm not sure why!🤣2025 GOALS
