Could the scary one have been The Hunting of Shadroth?
Between that and sneaking my older sister’s Ira Levins out of the cupboard where she’d hidden them, it’s no wonder I can’t do even mild horror these days.
I on't know, I'm not sure it could be, it is published later than when I left the childrens library and started using the adult one

I've never heard of her. I will Google her.

I actually have two more books ready for me at the library so I need to get through the books I have.

Have just (finally) finished Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert - didn't love it tbh although there were some amusing anecdotes. Just felt very long.....

Going to start Where the Crawdads Sing next as it's the work Book Club read for this month.

Just stumbled upon this thread - so brilliant - thanks @MrsStepford for starting it! Like many others here, I am a lifetime lover of reading (my mum taught me long before starting school, and I remain very grateful for this).

I generally read a mixture of Kindle books and library ebooks (I used to go to libraries a lot but now live rurally so don't have a library down the road any more to borrow physical books) and the odd 2nd-hand purchase. I use Book Bub, which is a mixed blessing as it's introduced me to some brilliant bargains and new authors but also tempts me to buy too many Kindle books! If I treat myself to new physical books nowadays, they are mostly non-fiction (about running, swimming, hiking, birds/wildlife, outdoors in general) when they have nice illustrations and will be enjoyable to browse through repeatedly - and, importantly to smell! I listen to a lot of audiobooks too.

I was a fan of Swallows and Amazons, Narnia, Chalet School, all the horsy books etc when I was young. And one of my favourite authors was Diana Wynne-Jones - especially The Ogre Downstairs about some kids with a magic chemistry set. I also randomly liked a series by Lois Lowry (USA based, mostly written in the 80s) about a girl called Anastasia - I think I identified with her character at the time as she was a little bit geeky and also a fan of reading, among other things!

I read a lot of psychological thrillers, and crime series as long as they're not really hideously gruesome (always interested in a Scandi series). I think I have similar taste to @Wednesday2000 and would also recommend Belinda Bauer. I'm reading a Ruth Ware ebook from the library right now and would recommend her too!

I'm going to visit this thread regularly from now on!

Oh yes I like Ruth Ware too. I have read all of her books.

I just remembered I really liked The Chalet by Catherine Cooper. I just googled that book and it says fans of Ruth Ware would like her too. I might see if there are more books of hers I haven't read. I like books set in winter or cold conditions. Same with films, actually. I'm not sure why!🤣
