With the news of the Avios -> Nectar devaluation, my 'hierarchy' will be:
- Santander Edge (presuming I'm accepted for it) for the first £750/month spend; effectively 1.6% cashback
- Nectar Amex; effectively 1%*, if merchant accepts Amex
- Natwest Reward CC if directly at a 'supermarket' (1%) or Barclaycard Avios if not (0.5% via Nectar)
*there's a £30 annual fee which means our effective rate is more like 0.8-0.9%, but the reality is this is my wife's longest held and only open credit card, which means that even if we didn't use it any more we'd still be keeping the account for the time being in order to keep her credit report healthy until we get a mortgage.0 - Santander Edge (presuming I'm accepted for it) for the first £750/month spend; effectively 1.6% cashback

For Santander Edge you need a Santander current account. I think this can be their Everyday Account (fee free, limited benefits) or the Santander Edge Current Account. The Edge current account has a fee of £3 a month. Is this in addition to the fee for the Edge credit card? I assume so. And does one have to pay the Edge credit card from a Santander account? I don't plan on changing my main account from my present provider, so would prfer not to have to pay the credit card from a Santander account.0

Yep, the Edge current account fee is in addition to the Edge CC fee. But you don't need it for the Edge CC, and you can avoid the Edge current account fee if you do not use that current account. The only reasons to have that current account would be if you want the cashback (in which case you'd have to pay the monthly fee), or if you want to use the Edge Saver (which you can have without paying the Edge current account fee).
You can pay the Edge CC from any current account.
