I have just finished my 4 yr undergrad masters and am starting my PhD. I had a student account with HSBC and they allow you to re apply for the student account as a PhD student! So free MP3 player on its way to me to ebay and make cash on! Bonus! :)

I don't understand why people are going for the mp3 player when you can buy a 512mb mp3 player from ebay for less than 25 quid.

Exam results were released today and luckily I got into my uni. But I've got a problem. I signed up to natwest online when I read martin's first article and they sent me a form to fill in and send back but then I checked martins article again and saw that it had changed so I didnt send back the form and now I can't find the forms to send back. Which means I still don't have a bank account and ucas or the loans company does not have any bank details from me. what do I do?do you know how long I have before the student loans company gives up on me?please dont give me bad news and tell me I have missed out on the chance to get my loan...I've got their quote on how much loan they will give me by the way, they're just waiting for my bank details.

I'm sure no-one will give up on you! Phone NatWest and ask if they can re-generate the form? You won't be the first to lose it, and I'm sure you won't be the last! we're still waiting to find out how much dosh DS is going to get!

I'm new to the overdraft thing, and plan to deficit banking thing, from my calculations I can earn £87.50 from placing all the HBOS 0% overdraft money in a 5% online saver. What risks are associated with doing this and when do I have to pay back this money, I notice they all seem to say "repayable on demand"?

    Many thanks
  • it seems everyone has pretty much sussed these accounts, but the problem is, my partner never opend a student account last year (1st yr of HND), and he's now due to start the 2nd yr, so now dosen't seem to qualify for these freebies, or even a student account by the looks of it  anyone help???

  • I have got a student account with smile - £1000 instest free. From this i took out £999 and put it into a savings account (first direct 5%). Then i thought i might try open another with Halifax and do the same, however when i went in they did a credit check and i think it was low because of the -999 that i owe... Is there anything i can do? thank you!
  • Hi - My daughter opened a student account with Martin's best buy HBOS but the overdraft she received is only £1000 not £1750. Is that right? how do they decide how much to allow, all these students have the same level of income?!
