My view on all this is:
Natwest has been top performing for some time, and the YP Railcard, despite being very insignifficant, is something that i will need, and something i will use, and it is just another perk. £100 overdraft is not really going to make that much difference.
Plus notice on the terms and conditions for Natwest, that the overdraft limit IS extendable beyond the normal limits, so long as you discuss matters with your bank manager, and that you are in serious hardship or something.
So IMHO natwest has been best for a fair few years, the account, staff and access to the branches and help has been very good from my experience with them so far. The application (when it did eventually happen) was relatively trouble free.
So my account is opened, and i am awaiting for my results, on the 18th w00t. Then i can get access to my overdraft, and put that in my A&L online saver for the meantime before i start Uni.
My reasons for this, Natwest has done me good in the past, i have so many things attached to the account, SO's DD's etc. I can remember the account number, plus, Natwest seem to be more prominent near uni campuses rather than HBOS< as in all honesty HBPOS doesnt have as many easily accessible branches near to the main campus.
However i did find it a bit cheeky that Natwest decided to place ads in all the envelopes that came from UCAS, this is clever, granted, but the simple minded people may just get the Natwest card because the info came to them, instead of researching etc. Altho everyone has their reasons. I chose Natwest, and i don't regret it, i should have some flexibility with them, so i am happy.
Lets see what happens

I got a hsbc one in mine, no sign of a natwest one, so maybe they were jus sent out randomly.0 -
Hi I read the above and do see the NatWest argument (I hastily edited the article when HBOS launched its new account)
I've added the following para
The alternative
NatWest's students account is in second place for interest free overdrafts, though a good distance behind. However it offers a 5 year young persons railcard worth £100 to first year students. Therefore for those not likely to be heavily overdrawn, or use 'deficit banking' this can outweigh the overdraft benefits.

Hmm.... But NatWest offer a 5 year railcard, which is worth £100 even without considering how much money it will save you on rail journeys... probably more than the mp3 player, I would have thought.
It's still a decent freebie though, if you don't use the train."It is dangerous to be right when those in power are wrong" - Voltaire0 -
When I started as a student, I was offered a free 3 year railcard or £50. Being naive, I took the money. But if you work it out, it's something like around £20 for a year's Young Person's Railcard.
So the 5 year one HSBC are offering does work out to £100 worth. And considering the HUGE savings made by using the railcard, I wished I had gone for it instead of the cash (saves up to 1/3 on most rail fares).0 -
