My memory of a superstition was that the ironing basket had to be empty before the bells, otherwise it'd be full all year. I hate ironing with a passion.... Now I have a lovely husband who "enjoys" ironing (finds it meditative), so I'm not bothered! What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?2

I don’t usually was on NY day as my mum used to like the house spotless, the washing basket empty and we always had steak of some sort on New Year’s Day….a luxury. She liked to start the year well in a hope it would continue. We always had a Scottish neighbour with black hair bring in a piece of coal - to keep us warm all year and he left by the back door to take any negativity out with him. He used to do this to several neighbours. I do usually keep the no washing rule although the first footing has gone by the wayside since I got married. I did put my washing on a quick wash at 11.30 this year to make use of cheap overnight electricity whilst I was up to do so. It went in the dryer just after midnight….but that’s the first time I think I’ve ever done anything laundry relate.Hope you feel better soon… take care and I hope 2025 is kind to you.January spends - £587.583

Happy new year everyone I hope you all have the best year 🥳🍾🥳
I had a nice relaxing evening at home last night and I stayed up long enough to see the fireworks. I had to get up for work today but I wasn’t starting until 12 so didn’t get up until 9.45am. I walked down to the station to get a bus after checking the app two days ago which informed me there would be one at 11.30 only to realise that the buses weren’t in fact running so I had to get a council owned taxi off the rank outside the station and the fare was £31 to travel ten minutes 😳😩😳😩the driver gave me a £10 discount because I work at the hospital. I then had to get home and was hoping the town bus service was running but no luck so I had to get another taxi from town and a cost of £25 so I think it’s safe to say I worked for nothing today 😡
Work was busy but not crazy and I had plenty to keep me going. I did struggle and was done in again after about an hour and a half but I made it to the end of the four hours. I came home and had a nice hot shower and covered all my joints and my feet in Tiger Balm and it’s very good for achey feet. I’m back in again on Friday and I’m hoping to catch up with my boss then to talk about my options because I think the ward is too much for me now. I felt my muscles spasm a few times while I was working and I tried to slide a window open but couldn’t because my hands are too weak. I still haven’t had a return to work done but will hopeful get that sorted on Friday if my boss is back.
I opened my first mystery book today and it looks good. It’s called Night Music by Jojo Moyes so I’m looking forward to starting that. I’ve signed up for my goodreads challenge for 2025 and I’ve been very optimistic and set it at 52, both DDs reckon I can read a book a week so I thought I would really challenge myself. I did it in 2024 and set it at 30 but I actually read 39. I do read a lot so if I’m travelling anywhere on the bus I read which on a work day is 40 minutes there and 20 minutes back if I walk part way and I read on my breaks so that’s another 45 minutes on a work day then I read nearly every night too. DD1 reads even more than me but she reviews books on instagram, she read 93 books last year including some Hillary Mantle which are hefty 😳. I also saw a cool idea on my book club page where a lady put away a pound for every book she read in 2024 then at the end of the year she had some money saved to spend on new books so I’m going to do that too
Money wise today had been terrible due to being fleeced by the council and tomorrow I have shopping to do so I haven’t managed a no spend day yet. I’m hoping for two over the weekend but we will see if I end up going out anywhere. I’m going mums tomorrow because I didn’t go yesterday then will do my shopping on the way home. I don’t need loads just some top ups of bread and milk and some veg for a stir fry. I took all my Christmas snacks and chocolate to work today so they aren’t here to tempt me anymore 😀Original Debt Owed Jan 18 = £17,630 Paid To Date = £6,736 Owed = £10,8946 -
Happy New Year. Have you checked the taxi cost with the council? I regularly have to get taxis to and from the nursing home and the 10 minute journey costs between £5 and £6 depending upon the time and traffic. Bank holidays carry a 20% + added cost. Even that would leave it under £10Aiming to make £7,500 online in 20222

That's a lot to pay to get to work!
I'm going to try to read more this year - or rather, get through more books as I tend to read myself to sleep over old favourites. I thought I'd start a journal of what I read to make myself read when I'm more awake, and hopefully process what I've read better.
You are very good taking Christmas treats to work! I still have mince pies and Christmas cake and the mince pies are staying in the freezer because they are a treat but not one I want to allow myself every day. I've also been given quite a lot of chocolate coffee beans but however tempting they are, I know I can only tolerate a few at once or I get reflux and/or hyped up. I am sure the things you brought in will help people's day along.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

Happy New Year, I hope this year is a better one for you.
Ouch to the taxi fares.
It usually takes me between 1-2 weeks to read a book depending on how thick it is, how much time I have and how much I'm enjoying it. I've seen where some people are reading several a week and wonder if either they have far too much spare time on their hands or are really reading them properly and just skimming them. I prefer to enjoy reading mine properly.I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)1
