My life is ruled by flaming superstitions from not walking under ladders to saying good morning Mr magpie and saluting everytime I see one on it own which can be quite often because there a lot nesting at the top of my garden 😀Humdinger1 said:I don't wash on NYD either @Onebrokelady. No washing has been done by me on NYD in my life, mum wouldn’t do it while I was living at home and I left home at 18 thoroughly trained not to do it and I’m 61 now, I did t even do it when the kids were little. All my washing has to be done but the time newyears Eve comes round otherwise it has to wait until the second. My DD1 phoned me today to ask if she can borrow my washing machine because here’s broke yesterday and I said yes but not until the 2nd 😀😀Seasidegal58 said:Sorry to hear about your DD's mug OBL. ☹️
I've never heard about not doing the laundry on New Year's Day! I suppose I must have over the years but I think I might give it a miss this year......🫣

Don’t even get me started on Friday the 13th or the number 13 in general. I try really hard not to work on that day and if I can get the day off I stay at home and do t done anything risky 😂😂 I won’t have anything numbered 13 in my house either, I made a garland out of Ivy and orange slices and had to make extra orange slices because there were originally 13 😂Cherryfudge said:I do get people being cautious - but if you turn it round - how many Friday 13ths have you lived through, and on how many have you been injured? Statistically, it's more likely to be 'lucky' than otherwise. My broken arm accident was on a Monday. However, you undoubtedly got hurt on a Friday 13th, and it wasn't anything trivial, so you're going to remember it.
That said, I'm getting my washing done today as the weather forecast isn't good and I want to wear my new socks again soon.

I think some of them are for common sense so your right in that it’s good to go into the new year with a clean slate so to speak, I also think some are for safety such as not walking under a ladder in case it or something falls on you. I know breaking a mirror was expensive at some point so that explains 7 years bad luck. They don’t upset me but I do live but them and I suppose I do find comfort in that 🙂daisy_1571 said:I've always tried to get 'straight ' on nye. Working full time and only having a small flat meant I usually had the clothes horse up with drying washing on it but dirty washing was empty, place was tidy, stairwell washed out etc. Superstition (as far as I knew it) was that you wanted to be in the best circumstances going into new year as that would be how your year would go. On the face of it that makes sense. I think it would never have occurred to my family to do a washing on ny day as generally (in Scotland as far as I know, maybe just more local to my area) that was a day to see family for a steak pie sit down meal, so not a general housework kind of day. I only heard of this superstition in the last few years of being on here.
I agree that its good to abide by any particular superstition when it comforts and helps you. If it upsets, then ignore it.

Do any of you open the back and front door at midnight on New Year’s Eve to let the old year out and the new year in 😳 that’s something else I do and I have my own version of first footing too It’s supposed to be that the first person to cross the threshold to your house after midnight should be a dark haired man for luck but I don’t know any dark haired men and I’m not wandering round in the dark at midnight so on NYD morning I go out the back door and walk through my garden which lead me to a short lane and the carpark where my garage is then I come back via the road to my house and back in through the front door, I take a piece of coal with me to bring in the door to signal abundance for the coming year. The piece of coal was gifted to me by my son in law years ago one Christmas and I keep it in a gold box on my bedroom window sill 😀

I didn’t go into town today because I didn’t feel like it. I was woken up at 7 am by the cat demanding breakfast then I fell asleep until 11am . I had a lovely slow start to my day instead. I started reading a new book and watched some you tube videos. I also checked my bank account to make sure everything is on track. Yesterday I read my meters and the payment went out today. I also set up my budget folder for 2025. I’ve written in all the categories and filled out all the amounts I pay until April when the bills go up but will fill them in when I know how much they are . I normally get a letter sometime in January about my rent but the council tax and water takes ages.
Mum messaged me today to ask me to pick up some shopping for her if I go over tomorrow but I had to warn her I might not be able to because I woke up with a sore throat this morning so will see if it developes into anything by tomorrow, I don’t want her to catch anything and the shopping she needs isn’t urgent. I think I’ve nipped it in the bus because I gargled with some TCP and that normally sorts it out. It feels ok at the moment but I’ve had a slight headache so I’m wondering if I’m brewing something. I got a lovely present from my friend whose husband keeps bees, it’s a gift box of his honey and two beeswax candles so I will have some lemon and honey before bed as well as another gargle. Sadly I don’t have any whisky so can’t have a hot toddy 😟
Hopefully my immune system will see it off 🤞🤞

I’m wondering if it was started by a disgruntled housewife who just fancied a day off from the washing 😀jwil said:I don't do the washing on NYD either. It's nonsense really but still...
Now that sounds like a plan & something my mum might have thought up.

My parents do this every year. I rarely stay up to Midnight so I open the back door in the morning.Onebrokelady said:Do any of you open the back and front door at midnight on New Year’s Eve to let the old year out and the new year in 😳 that’s something else I do and I have my own version of first footing too It’s supposed to be that the first person to cross the threshold to your house after midnight should be a dark haired man for luck but I don’t know any dark haired men and I’m not wandering round in the dark at midnight so on NYD morning I go out the back door and walk through my garden which lead me to a short lane and the carpark where my garage is then I come back via the road to my house and back in through the front door, I take a piece of coal with me to bring in the door to signal abundance for the coming year.
