Update on progress: so far I have
- relocated some ornaments from the mantlepiece to the Christmas tree, 2 strings of lights from the pictures to the holly in the DR, and a small vase of Christmas flowers from one side of the fireplace to the other, leaving the LR looking much less cluttered
- put the turkey and gammon in to roast: they will be served cold for tea tomorrow
- boiled up the giblets for gravy/soup: Rosie's mouth is watering at the smell, and she keeps looking longingly at the saucepan
- iced the coffee cake, which looks ok but is not one of my best (there's plenty of other cakes for the gannets to devour tomorrow)
- moved stuff off the worktop in the utility onto the (smaller) table so that I can store all teatime food out there (where it's cooler) or in the utility FF
- removed basket of flowers from the DR table to the utility draining board and watered it - they have lasted well, since the end of November
- arranged for an e-birthday-card to be sent to our church organist tomorrow
- asked DH to do all the hoovering this afternoon while I'm out with Rosie (he's gone back to bed for now, as per usual).
Other aspirations for today:
- tidy my study, which will be occupied by DGS1+2 tomorrow night
- flick of the duster-onna-stick all through, both down- and up-stairs
- empty all indoor bins and throw away Rosie's old chewed-up toys
- water remaining houseplants
- easy lunch of mushroom omelette
- Rosie's walk, followed by a bath for her so she smells sweet for the visitors tomorrow, and a shower for me to wash off her moulting hair and the flecks of muddy water that she will shake all over me
- give Rosie some new toys to cheer her up after her bath
- clean the bathroom thoroughly!!!
- prepare chestnut, portobello mushroom, sweet potato and cranberry wellington, and chill, ready to be cooked tomorrow.
- cook vegan non-sausage rolls as soon as the turkey and gammon come out of the oven
- blitz and refrigerate vegan gravy base without onion and meat gravy base with
- prepare potatoes and selection of veg for tomorrow
- find something for tea tonight - probably meatballs
- mop all hard floors
- make sure I have my master food lists for tomorrow - but basically we shall eat whatever is in the fridges, plus whatever my DC bring with them
- get to bed at a reasonable hour.
Yes, I know it looks a lot - but it's all doable if I keep chipping away at it steadily.
Will update again later xxx
ETA:
Fayolle, I love Lebkuchen but already have some of my own. Am willing to donate gingernuts to the WAC if they float anyone's boat! xx

Find out about opening an account for DS whilst in town.

I like a gingernut...FWIW I can claim to take them for medicinal purposes, too
Whatever it is, Fayolle, it is catching. I have emptied DW and started a restack, put pots away that had been LTD, done another wash up including the rack etc from the hob. Kitchen much tidier...I'm going to actually clean it now...
I'ver jusy logged onto the laptop to 'pay' the wages as it's a BH on Monday which could cause a delay. Technically I'm on leave.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Hi all
Rather nice trip to York to visit a museum and have lunch out. We were going to walk the walls but it started raining. Going out in a bit to meet family in the pub but I think everyone would rather stay here.
I have my parents and MIL coming for tea tomorrow and no idea what we are going to feed them, I might need a trip to the supermarket tomorrow morning. I keep doing bits of flying in between bits of doing very little. Real life is going to be a shock next week.9 -
Update on progress. If it's gone, it's done:
- water the remaining houseplants
- easy lunch of mushroom omelette [Change of plan! I cut the cooked turkey off the bone and put it in a T'ware box to take up less space in the fridge, so we opted for a Henry VIII-style meal and stripped the carcase between us]
- a shower for me [I didn't actually get wet when Rosie jumped out of the bath and shook herself dry, so I'm saving my shower for tomorrow morning]
- prepare chestnut, portobello mushroom, sweet potato and cranberry wellington, and chill, ready to be cooked tomorrow
- prepare potatoes and selection of veg for tomorrow [I can do this while watching Only Connect and University Challenge]
- find something for tea tonight - probably meatballs
- mop all hard floors
- early bed.
Medicinal gingernuts are in the WAC biscuit tin tonight xxx

Made it thro’ the Xmas madness - now in limbo in that strange time of year where it never really gets light and all we seem to eat is cheese
Will be taking down half our Xmas decs tomorrow, the tree will be taken down on New Years Day. Went shopping today - bought Xmas cards, paper, bags and crackers for next year, all half price & very MSE.
Blowing a hoolie here, gales, rain, coastal overtopping and boats cancelled - pretty much usual for the time of year.
Can offer Xmas shortbread for the WAC and one lone left-over mince pie
WMx1 & TDx1 - will try harder tomorrow.
Love to all, Thriftyxxx9 -
Happy Christmas, sorry I’m late. Had a busy month, DS1 has moved home so we are all adjusting.
house vacuumed
another fat skeleton crew member here, I have booked tomorrow afternoon off. It was meant to be for a rest but now DH is off too.9 -
I am in bed, have been for a few minutes as am knackered BUT kitchen and bathroom were both fully cleaned, chicken leftovers boiled for stock and meat stripped off, chicken soup made with barley so I won’t be eating any. DD had some for her tea, rest has been potioned up , labelled and refrigerated. Vacuum cleaner brush roll cleaned. WM and DW both primed. Another attempt at knitting…dropped a stitch so hade to put it back as I couldn’t puck it up. Looking forward to gingernuts as I can’t eat real food now until the morning as my vertical half hour also requires an empty stomach.
Meal out booked for theatre visit in Feb at quaint little Italian restaurant which is not a chain restaurant and is lovely.

ionafan said:Morning all.
I went to bed last night with backache and it's no better this morning. Have swallowed some parrots and am going to be very careful about flying. DH will have to do the hoovering while I concentrate on food prep.
@Cloth_of_Gold I have always left my decorations up until Twelfth Night, but this year I am finding it hard to cope with all the added clutter, so I shall be taking bits down every day from now until only the most significant pieces (including Flylady cards) are left. The outside lights will probably stay up until Candlemass (2nd. Feb), as I hate the winter darkness.
Better get moving again. Will report back later xxx
My mother used to do that. After NYE she would gradually take things down so it didn't suddenly look bare.

Went into the West End this morning and got a very nice 3/4 length wool overcoat; it was just what I was looking for. Came home and made lunch and washed up. Fiddle-faddled around, made tea, washed up made supper washed up, looked online for a couple of scarves. There was an absolutely lovely blue alpaca one but it was a lot more than I wanted to pay so I forced myself not to buy it. I found another one, not as nice but still nice, in lambswool and less than half price, so that was good. I also bought a yellow Harris tweed one on Etsy, which looks nice too.I've bought quite a few wool things recently and last year we were plagued with clothes moths and all my jumpers were ruined. We had all manner of lavender moth repellent things around but they had no effect whatsoever. I don't want to use and nasty chemicals but has anyone got any foolproof methods for preventing moths as I don't want all my recent purchases to end up full of holes. Not done anything else really - it's amazing how much time internet research takes.9
