I bought what I thought were lovely napkins from a craft fair a few months back. Navy blue stipes mostly with gold. Thought they'd be nice for Christmas. Set the table, unfurled them with a flourish and turns out they are a massive 6 inches by 12. The sort of thing that would be fine if one had posh people over to have a glass of sherry and a small piece of cheese but useless for us sloppy eaters. So looking at them as they dry after being washed and thinking they will go directly into the disposal box. Waste of $8 but they'll make me cranky every time I see them in the drawer.
Front room of doom is mostly tidied up - just need to get OH to decide what he wants to do with FiL's down bed topper. (I'm thinking popping it over to Dog's Trust and if they don't want it it's for the dump). There's 2 pillows he's moved to the hall to be dumped. 3 chairs have been shifted somewhere - 2 are part of the dining room set and the other is a big comfy arm chair that will eventually move back to the front room once it's furnished as a bedroom again.
OH put 3 cushions in a big "laundry" bag. One is a beautiful cross stitch done by MiL so I've pulled that out of the bag assuming it was disignated for disposal. It can go on the armchair once it's in position to accompany a few of her cross stitch pictures as that was her bedroom when she lived with us. I added another small random cushion of hers - it's of no sentimental value. That leaves 2 small tables. And some random bits including a large shoe box with MiL's thimble collection. I've bundled them up into groups (birds vs flowers vs wedgewood Christmas, etc) so that we can look at selling them on at some point.
Oh and prob TMI but the bra I have on is going directly from me to the bin when I strip off later. Well past its BBD.

My approach to decluttering is a bit scattershot at the moment but I've decided to start with the kitchen. Larder cupboard is done. Today I've tackled the cupboard under the sink. Four partial rolls of bin bags, three floor cleaners and a thousand cloths (probably). I've chucked some pet allergy stuff that we've had for years and never used, so that's three bottles gone. Plus some paste cleaner that was so dried out it was unusable.
I will do a proper list later.18 -
Betharooni said:Have started making a small start on the decluttering as I’ve had a couple of days off over Xmas. As I’m not counting and I’m not on the 2023 thread, thought I could post here and start it off.Went through a big concertina folder of random paperwork, which I’ve been able to reduce down quite considerably so it fits (with space to spare) in a box file. Some leaflets etc into recycling, all letters and sensitive documents into a carrier bag which I will take into work and shred in the New Year, as it is a decent industrial shredder and you don’t need to remove staples. Concertina folder to go, but unsure what direction as yet (whether to offer to stationery-mad niece and nephew, give to charity shop or just put in bin).Have put my 2023 calendar in the recycling and 2024 calendar is ready to go in its place. Have given one of my many notebooks to my Mum to use for noting down plan numbers etc so she can get rid of some of her old paperwork as well.
Have offered unwanted chest of drawers to DB1 so he is pondering that at the moment. If he decides he doesn’t want it, will offer to other brothers and then to charity shop. It’s in excellent condition but I want a change and can fit the items from it elsewhere to make better use of my space in my room.
I’m off to declutter some wool into a scarf and mentally prepare for working tomorrow. Thank goodness this is only a three day week!

DB1 has agreed to have my unwanted chest of drawers so have been slowly working through the drawers to declutter unused/unwanted items. Have cleared out about 3 carrier bags full of warm items (tights, hats, bedding, etc) to go to local homeless charity and a carrier bag full of t-shirts to go to charity shop. Still a few drawers to go through so there will be more to go still. Am hoping to get the clothes sorted by the end of this week or beginning of next week so we can move my chest of drawers into my brother’s room and I then need a couple of shelves put up and want to give my room a deep clean and a really good hoover before my new dressing table arrives on 21/1. All of these things should enable me to use the limited space in my bedroom in a better way and I’ve been wanting a dressing table for years so it also fulfills that.
Have also been through my “memory box” and sorted out some bits from that to go in the recycling.
Have been wanting to get rid of my toolbox as I’m not using half the space in it and it is big and bulky. Had a brainwave today of using a decent sized plastic box (one of the Really Useful ones) which has recently been emptied out which should be plenty big enough and will fit on my shelves more comfortably so I can get to it more easily. Will probably try to sort moving those bits into the other box after I’ve had a bit of a rest today.
Have finished knitting the scarf which will be going to homeless charity and has finished off about 4 part balls of wool. As I still have more left over, and we had a leftover granny square from my Mum making a blanket last year, I am using some of the remaining leftover wool to make a lap blanket, just adding more and more rounds to that leftover granny square until it’s big enough. Have used up about 4 balls so far and still got about 30 or so more rounds to do on the blanket. Hoping to get that finished in the next week or so and then it can be added to the bags for the homeless charity and get them out hopefully next weekend or the weekend after. That should take my leftover wool levels down to very little and anything remaining can wait for when I do more knitting later on in the year.
Hopefully back to report more decluttering work in the next couple of days.

Could do without being poorly. I said I would cook a nice dinner tonight for my visitors. Also folk travelling for my Mum's 90th birthday tea tomorrow. Catering by me of course. I can't wait to get back to normal on Wednesday. I have a lot to do by then. Wish me luck.

I guess it's a form of decluttering though, as I've hardly eaten for 5 days and have lost half a stone - probably made up of yucky gunk!2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

Happy New Year All
Cousin came round today and cleaned out under the stairs and the hall cupboard, chucked most of it in the garden to be collected at some point with the old garden furniture, he did take some bits home with him, some of dh old tools and some toys I had for his kids (so unfortunately added to his clutter!) I gave him some money for his trouble as I wasn't getting under there with the threat of mice, he didn't find any in either places which I'm not sure if I'm happy or worried about, I'm hoping they've moved on but I think that's very unlikely. Have put all food packets in plastic boxes, hopefully cutting off any food supply and will keep everything crossed, does anyone have any other suggestions for getting rid, I do have a cat but much as I love her she is a bit useless 😂'You have brains in your head. Happy New year Everyone!
LO made a start this morning, and decluttered a big pile of books and soft toys, making space for some new Christmas presents. Very proud of her, as it was unprompted. She received some books from “another little girl” who lives on our road. In her words, she felt such joy, that she wanted to send some of her things for “another little girl” to feel as special.
I have a list of jobs to tackle this week, will post my progress if I manage to get stuff done. 😊
