i received a bill from my credit card co for £180 2 weeks ago,and when i asked
them why they had taken this from my account without my authorisation they said they didn`t need it, as you have a recurring account withh sentanta, which i had no knowledge of, called setanta and more or less toled tough luck, ok so i paid £180 for a years subs in 2007 but surely i should have been informed as in previous years and either choose to carry on or quit
so in all after last year of paying £180 and after approx 2 months the subs went down to £9.99 per month and then this year taking £180 from my account when the monthly payments are £12.99 a month i feel entitled to be peeved i have so far sent letters to 3 addresses and haven`t had a reply, also to cancellation dept and no replies. My question is can they take the old price from me when other peple are paying a lower rate, and what address do i need to cancel.0 -

Im new here but I have the same problem. Martin Lewis said.....
Youre not the first person who has had problems cancelling Setanta. Its customer service departmend clearly needs to pull its finger out. What worries me is that you subscribed on a credit card which, so you get recurring payments. That means technically, YOU cant cancel. Only the company that you are paying can, which is not easy when you cant get hold of them. Cancelling the card may not have stopped it. If the subscription is still active, then the company can still come to you for the cash. If thats happening, write to the company by registered mail. If that doesnt work, then ask to dispute the transaction with the card company. Failing that, the last resort is to make a complaint to the financial ombudsman.0 -
I sent a recorded delivery letter which apparently didn't get delivered according to Royal Mail, I've been away for a couple of weeks got back and decided to resend via special delivery.
Imagine my suprise when my Setanta channels disapeared and all this with a letter that hasn't been delivered or signed for. Unless of course Setanta actioned my cancelation from the special delivery and took one day's notice.0 -
Yes, finally people who have the same problems as me!!!
i phoned them to cancel, and they wouldnt speak to be as it is in my partners name... but comes out of MY BANK!, so i decided to go hell for leather with them, told them i wanted to canel immediatley and i was not sendin a letter due to the way i had been treated. Oh and all of a sudden they speak to me, give me it for 7.50 a month for the next 6 months.... If you want to keep setanta but it's just the cost.. try bartering like i did, they absoloutley hate losing customers and would rather give you it cheap than not at all. Hope this helps!

I finally got through to Setanta tonight.I tried several times before and sent three e-mails to try and cancel.Tonight l was told l can only do this by post...which l will.
I also phoned Barclays to stop Setanta taking money.Guess what ? They can't !!!! So if Setanta are going to drag their heels and delay cancelling my subscription l am faced with only one choice.....close my 20 year old account with Barclays !!! !!!!!! !!! :mad:0 -
Are you paying by DD from a current account? If so, why can't you cancel it? If, on the other hand, you are paying by credit card continuous authority, then you can't cancel. Only Setanta can do that0

Hi everyone...Just to let you know that i finally got rid of Setanta in late may after initially trying to get rid in early march.
I stopped my credit card & took out a new card with another company. Not so easy these days for everyone and certainly a drastic measure but it worked. Had to endure numerous phone calls from them, & some of those calls were bordering on intimidation. I did though get rid of them in the end.
My latest problem is i'm being swamped with mail & emails saying "we want you back, best offer yet, don't miss a kick !"
Minor problem, really, because all that bumf can be easily deleted/ binned.
They are starting to become more aware that they've lost a lot of goodwill, & a lot of money, by offending the casual on/off subscriber.
The fact remains though that after the hassle i had with them i will never go back, never.0 -
I too have had difficulties cancelling Setanta. I tried to ring them and got a recorded message telling me that they were too busy and call back later. So I sent them an email giving them 30 days notice. They took a monthly payment 2 days later so I then cancelled the Direct Debit. A month later they started to chase me for the £9.99 I "owe" them as I hadn't given them any notice. I explained about the phone call and the email and their response was "You can't cancel by email it's in the T&Cs, we ignore all such emails, it happens to a lot of people".
I later checked the Terms and it mearly states that notice has to be given in writing. They don't specify what form of written communication. They don't require postal mail and they DO NOT exclude email, fax or telex. I pointed this out to them in a recorded post letter of complaint that also required them to provide an escalation path to their regulatory supervisor.
Guess what? No reply.0 -
Am just going to report my card as lost / stolen so they can't take any more money.
That won't help I'm afraid. The only people who can cancel a recurring DD from a credit card are the receiving Company -Setanta!! I do feel for you, but this is one of the dangers of using a CC recurring DD. You just can't stop it yourself.
This is quite a problem, I work for Credit Card processing company and one of the reports I saw being created several months ago was a list of all recurring transactions on "Closed" accounts. A lot were for AOL, and Sky where cardholders had closed their CC account for the same reason as ppl are here.
I couldnt actually understand how these could appear on Closed status accounts as the authorisation should have rejected the transaction. Was even more suprised to find out these are sent in unapproved - which I didnt think was allowed (I think these tran types have special allowances).
Anyway, I have just emailed our Industry Services group to find out their stance on it (i.e is it legal to have these transaction come in unapproved and is there any way to stop them). It may be a case of having to dispute or chargeback each transaction and let them (Setanta/AOLetc and the Issuer)fight over it. Will let you know.0
