Trying to cancel Setanta?!
Comments
-
I followed all their rules regarding this - I spoke to someone 10/06/08 - was told that I needed to send a letter. I imagined this would be hard to cancel therefore sent it next day recorded delivery.
It was delivered from the Sunderland office 12/06/08. My payment is due out 13/06/08 and low and behold - they claim they didn't recieve my letter until 14/06/08.
I contacted them because they took another payment (£12.99) out of my account 13/07/08 and they have now told me that the terms and conditions have changed and that I had to give 60 days notice from 01/06/08.
I discussed this at length with him - and he didn't give a s*** about the situation.
I asked for a refund and was told I had to write to them to get a refund. He refused to give me a phone number and claimed that they don't have phone numbers for other departments.
I am completely at a loss now - they are absolutely crap!
Am just going to report my card as lost / stolen so they can't take any more money.
What an absolute disgrace of a company.0 -

That won't help I'm afraid. The only people who can cancel a recurring DD from a credit card are the receiving Company -Setanta!! I do feel for you, but this is one of the dangers of using a CC recurring DD. You just can't stop it yourself.0 -

When I phoned up on 07/06/08 I was told it was thirty days' notice.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
I've received a letter today advising me that my direct debit has been cancelled. This is because I have recently switched bank accounts and I told my new bank not to transfer the DD.
I'm not sure what to do... here's the story so far.
I phoned them up to cancel on 07/06/08 and was told I need to write to the Sunderland address, giving one month's notice. I did this and sent the letter on 09/06/08, recorded delivery. Unfortunately the post office lost the letter and I wrote again on 28/06/08, this time sending the letter special delivery, next day. They received the letter on 30/06/08 but I have since found out that the notice period has changed to sixty days.
The last payment (£15) came out of my account on 04/07/08 and today I got the letter from their Head of Customer (Dis)service, with a Newry address on it.
So, are my two original letters all for nothing? Do I need to write again? Should I email/write to all known addresses and argue the case or just ignore all contact from now on?*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -

I wrote on 8th June 2008 and have had cancellation confirmed from 26/8/08 (how do they work that out). Of course I had to ring to confirm this (used the number for taking their "summer deal" and got straight through).
Have cancelled my credit card (but cc company say they can still charge me!?) and have put 2 payments into "dispute". Consumer Credit Acts state relationship is with credit card company not you so once in dispute cc company should act for you - and not charge interest on unpaid balances "in dispute".
Leave this company - go down the pub to watch any "big matches" and enjoy the day when they go bust.:beer:0 -
therivierakid,
As I understand it, Setanta changed the terms & conditions on 1st June 2008.
However, they could not be applied to existing customers before 1st July 2008, because the terms & conditions in force before 1/6/08 required Setanta to give one month's notice of the changes:7. Changing the Conditions
...............
(b) We will give you at least one month's notice of any changes or additions. ......................
Section 8 said:8. Ending the Contract
(a) ...... Unless otherwise agreed in your Option, you may end the Contract after the Minimum Term for any reason by giving us one month's notice. .....
Therefore, the former condition of one month's notice, as above, applied (to existing customers) to any written notice that was received by Setanta before 1/7/08, in my view.0 -
Well, they definitely received the 2nd letter on 30th June but something tells me they didn't bother opening it.
I'll maybe write to the Newry address and explain the situation.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -

Hi
The address is SS

I seem to have struck lucky by using my bank account for the DD. I was able to cancel that online and now receive letters from Newry for the last 6 weeks telling me there is a payment problem. I had an email reply to my first attempt at cancellation. I had a phonecall and argued that by informing them by email IS a written notice. I also asked tham to send a FINAL bill if I had 'underpaid' - no bill as yet. I will give them another month to send a bill and will then send back all their letters.
This thread and many other like it (google) has got to go to 'watchdog'.0 -
Same problems here... husband cancelled around Mid-June (by letter as adviced) since he was going out of the country. They tried to sell him a free month if he kept it even though he had explained why he cancelled. Money still taken from DD on the 23rd even though he said he cancelled that. I cancelled DD again online so no more money out of the account. Had two phone calls last week from them and they would not discuss with me since it was not my account. Got into a very heated discussion with the second caller who kept asking when it would be more convenient to call even though I told several times that the other half would not be home until end of September. What she did say was, that the account was not closed! Three letters have arrived informing that there is a balance to pay on the account. Fat chance! I emailed them and told I wanted the account closed and an apology. Of course have not heard from them.
I have warned everybody I know at work and on the websites I use never to take Setanta.
Sky was absolutely great with their sports channel cancellation. Done within the hour of the phone call and will get it again when husband is back. Never Setanta. They would probably be doing great trade if they acted like Sky.0
