Save more (inc for next Christmas)

    Spend less

Try to use cash rather than cards (it doesnt feel like spending with cards)

    Cook more from scratch

Do more housework (I've got myself a kitchen timer so I can do it in manageable bursts !!)

Try to be more frugal & less wasteful in many areas (more OS really)

Leave the credit card at home in a safe place

Visit MSE more often to keep me on the straight & narrow

Nothing drastically different to others !

Seasonal regards to everyone. Hope you all have a lovely Christmas & an OS style 2008 !

  • i know its not new year yet, but after all the hussle and bussle of christams shopping et, which is quite over for me, as even though i have bought everything for christams i am going shopping around the 3 pm just to see what reduced stuff they have ...well it is all money saving....:D

but i have been thinking about the new year... and what am i going to change.....i have decided NOT to shop on sundays...as i can remember when shops were closed, and there was only a little corner shop that opened until 1pm which was about 8 miles away if you needed anything...

so we can have a day in the house without 'nipping' out to get some bits..even if we go out as a family..... NO SHOPS not even to have a nose without spending....

i am also determind to get on track with meal planning, and my house cleaning

and try new things to eat...as i must admit when i wrote down the meals that we eat to try and make a meal plan out of them... it ended up being about 12 meals.... lol.... so going to copy and paste some recipes from here print them off and put them in my own 'cookbook' folder....

anyone else going to do an os resolution ???

My goals for 2008 are geared towards the fact that we may be wanting to buy a house again (we're renting at the moment) in the second half of the year. Alternatively, we may drop down to one income (mine) and live more simply/frugally (depends on what happens with OH's job). So:

    1. My major financial goal is to live on my income, and only draw on OH's salary to pay for his work-related costs and childcare. Only trouble with this goal is that OH doesn't know about it, and I think that it will be easiest if I don't explain it to him. He will either say, "but we're not buying a house, stop obsessing" or "and of course I'm not going to end up without a job". [Note to self: the extra money I get from updating manuals for legal exec students is not all mine. It is to pay for treats and our summer holiday; the rest of the family suffer when I have to work at weekends, on christmas eve and boxing day!]
    3.

    2. I will keep our food bills to £500 or less a month. To do this, I will do food planning and I will also keep a log of our weekly shop. I will take lunches to work and try not to throw any food away.

    3. As soon as christmas is over, I will get some routines sorted so that we can keep the house clean without paying someone to do it. However, I will also apply for direct payments (my son gets DLA). The two things I am hoping for are some help with the housework (the reason it is so hard to do housework is that he needs to be supervised almost constantly) and some childcare so OH and myself can have one night off a month.
    Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600
    Overpayments to date: £3000
    June grocery challenge: 400/600
  • Not me, no. I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions. I think something like 'I will eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day' is completely impossible (or maybe I have no willpower :o ). I think the New Year's Resolution tradition is somewhat of a guilt trip; if you break it you have start the year off 'badly'. I think you can make promises to yourself at any time of the year. :D

  • Hi CTC,The shops where I live used to close at 12.30 Saturday and all day Sunday so if you forgot something you had to catch a bus and then carry it all home so you usually did without. I decided to do a monthly resolution and write down things I want to get done that month anything not done got priority next month . I did that this year and it worked quite well.
  • I'm hopeless at things like that! I write on my whiteboard everyday what I need to do, but I only ever do the things that I want to do or the ones that don't take very long! :o

Zenobia - I do that too. But I must admit that 'decorating' gets bumped from month to month, so I think I am going to have to make that a formal Resolution for 2008! Maybe I will take it more seriously now that I have written it down here. The other one is actually eating what's in the freezer - if only to create some space in it.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I have just made my list, it isn't too excessive, hopefully manageable

    - Buy local produce

    - Start knitting

    - Menu planning, cooking from scratch, shopping to a budget, price book, recipe pricing etc

    - Get finances in order

    - Get our veg patch sorted

    - Have Christmas sorted by end of September

    - Make a housework rota
We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment
