When they issue a short notice opt in that you have one hour to get ready for email will be useless as it's flawed as an instant communication method.
Of course if you refuse to opt in until you get an email that is your prerogative.1 -

Because that would stop you choosing an alternative scheme like those from Loop and as such discourages competition.
