That SO made me laugh. I visualised an older couple zimmering around Sainsburys doing their present buying.
"Oh look, what about these Pies for her and this lovely big bag of sugar for the daughter"
Thank you for my first giggle of the day.0 -
My sister in law always buys pretty awful presents - last year (AND the year before) 2 of my sons received a bumper book of The Lion, The Witch and the wardrobe - so that means we have 4 sets - boys are 15 and 13. The youngest son got a teddy money box with a pink ribbon round it's neck that you paint.
Trouble is she insists on her daughter (our niece) getting money off us!All credit cards paid off.

When he received a hood we were flabbergasted! Just a hood! He is 14 and when they asked if he liked his pressie he said " Well, its a bit weird!"
Obviously no thought gone into that one. I spend hours thinking and planning what to buy everyone and i don't think many do when it comes to us.
Were the same put time and effort in to presents, thou my cousin takes the biscuit, her daughter is 3 weeks younger than mine, every xmas of bday we get cast offs, - toys thats are in boxes, or even tags on them, in sept for bday last 2 yrs we had clothes from primark no tags - this yr there both 5, so we had a summer dress in age 4-5!

Despite having been with her son 14 years, my MIL always buys me slippers every year that are too small. And this year I got size 14/16 PJs (Lovely, spot on) and a 10/12 dressing gown..won't even go around me...should be flattered I guess!

My MIL often calls me Debbie - (not my name) despite the fact I have been with her son for nearly 20 years. A couple of years ago she looked me up and down and said "You don't look as wide as usual". That was her way of paying me a compliment (I think). All credit cards paid off.

I love these threads - I feel better moaning as you sometimes feel it is only your family.
I could post for a long time on this, but will do edited highlights...
When I was 25 my mum sent me one of those dolls that were popular then. About the size of a 3 year old and standing with their face against the wall as if playing hide and seek. It scared the cr*p out of me, as it had no face when you turned it over, and I kept catching out of the corner of my eye and thought I saw a person!
It went under my flat mates bed until I posted it back to her - it came from her shop and I knew it cost over £100! I usually kept quiet about the gifts (butterfly brooch(sp?) - I hate anything with insects on and never wear brooches, earrings, when I never wear any etc) but this was so much money I couldn't lie!
My MIL gets me things every year with cats on - we have 2 live ones and don't need socks, tea trays, tea towels, pegs or ornaments with them on. Added to this we live on the second floor with a dish washer and tumble dryer, so don't even have a use for tea towels or pegs! To make this worse, the pegs had been wrapped in box that had been for an answerphone - we HAVE to visit them to get our gifts, they won't mail them. So did an Oscar winning performance with every gift, and at this one was stumped as we have an answerphone - I was thanking her when she said "I'd look inside" and then saw the pegs, really glad I do the presents with them totally sober!Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
Total so far £280 -

DH family do not bother with us or our dd's which upsets us. I think we have seen his mother four times this year and that is a flying visit. I always try and encourage her and make her feel welcome to no avail, but I guess it is her choice. This is why I dread what she buys us for xmas, it would be easier if she didn't bother because she has put no love in to it!
I could have written this post word for word.Except my 3 kids think the world of MIL and FIL. I honestly don't know why, they have seen them twice all year, the kids didn't even get a christmas card from them this year.DH always makes excuses for them .

Every year my Mum gets me nutcrackers. I think she picks them up in Sainsburys thinking 'I must get Vyvyan's present today'. She's getting on a bit. I now have quite a few sets of nutcrackers. Good job I have a sense of humour too as the rest of the familly think it's :rotfl:0

One year my son got an ornament from my Gran. It was a teddy holding a bunch of flowers and a placard saying "lovely Granddaughter". His face was a picture when he opened it :rotfl:
It had a home made 50p sticker on the bottom, so I think she got it at a jumble sale. Here I go again on my own....0
