    Just forget about it.

  • I might actually keep the global money account - must research on whether it's better than my Starling current account for foreign currency spending.
I also have a Starling account for overseas (€) use and I think the HSBC one is better for me: Starling charge you to move money from £ to €, whereas the Global Money Account allows you to leave your money in £ and pay in the local currency, fee-free.  So no need to guesstimate how much you think you need to convert and end up with € sitting there unused and doing nothing useful*. Also, it has a higher Daily Cash withdrawal limit (also fee-free).
    * I have in fact transferred all the odd € amounts I had sitting in Starling and Revolut accounts to the Global Money Account so can easily spend or transfer them from there.

Isn't the Starling fee for moving £ to € just an unnecessary cost?

If you hold £ in the Starling account, but spend in the local currency, they use the Mastercard exchange rate, with no fees, which I believe is the same as the Global Money account?

And there's no unused € sitting anywhere...

    Or am I misunderstanding you?

Yes, you're right which I think is different from when I opened my account (when Starling first launched).  I opened a € account with them because it was useful for sending money but I don't need two € accounts and as putting money in the Starling one isn't free, I've just closed it.

I think I'll ditch Starling too. With the HSBC account, if I need to pay in Euros and convert to £, is there a fee like the .4% Starling charge?

No, it's free of charge.  Tip: I just got rid of my Starling account (£) by switching to Lloyds, do it by 14th Nov to get £175 reward.  No need to have any direct debits etc set up.
  • Last year around this time they did a similar sort of promotion but you had to switch your account.

I was wanting to get away from FD (also owned by HSBC group) because of their half-baked Mastercard debit implementation, and there was nothing really worth staying for their existing clients - HSBC UK had the bonus savings account with 3% or whatever it was at the time, so long as you didn't withdraw your money for the month.

The switch money was just the cherry on the top, so I thought I'd give it a go - sadly not accepted for the advanced account as I didn't qualify for the complete £1k overdraft. Near it, but no cigar. (Not that I'd have any use for it anyway, I'm always in the black, so the criteria for them qualify for it is rather odd, they used to do it on salary paid in which I'd have qualified).
  • I got a notice saying open the app by December and be entered into a prize draw.

I'd like to do the same. How do you deposit € into the Global Money account please?

You can send the money as a payment from Starling in € and it will arrive in your Global Money Account in £ but you won't have been charged a fee. Mine took 24 hours to arrive. Go into the Global Money Account and choose "view more" to see your account details.
