Will your NI go down next month to help?

Twiggy, my brother used to lodge away during the week, lodging Monday through Thursday, which seems like a great way of getting some extra income but having your house to yourself at weekends. What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?2

I believe there is an amount you can earn from a lodger without having to pay tax as Tilly (of tilly tidy fame) used to talk about it, but I'm not sure how much it is now.

Thank you for confirming. It has been a long time since Tilly & I wasn't sure if the amount had changed.

Well I actually may have a lodger lined up with no effort on my part! My neighbours 30-ish year old son knocked the door last night - he's split up from his gf and so is moving out and I'd mentioned to his mum that I will be getting a lodger! I need to look into what the going rate is so that I can tell him what I want and if that's agreed then he'll move in in a couple of weeks! I'd said there is a few things I want to do with the room (paint and replace the door) before but also if he gets desperate to let me know!
So he was round for about an hour meaning I didn't get round to sorting out the kitchen drawer - well I started but didn't finish as that was what I was doing when he came round and by the time he left I was too hungry to do anything other than demolish a rather large portion of pasta! Oh and game changer - putting caramelized red onion chutney on garlic bread!!! YUM!
Today's bits and bobs:- Work on crochet pillow cover (doing one square a day to aim to finish it by the end of the month)
- Load of washing on eco wash setting
- Take some of the leftover pasta to work for lunch (not sure how many people my hungry mind thought I was feeding last night!)
- Update spreadsheet
- Look into what rooms rent out for
- Hang washing on airer
- Package up return
- Complete clearing out drawer
- Dinner from stores
- Work on a crochet project of some description (I have a few on the go!)
Debt as at 5 June 2023 - £15,600.89
Current debt - £5,935.00
Total paid off - £9,665.89 (61% paid off)3 -
That sounds like the perfect lodger. He'd be almost living with his mum but more free to come and go as he pleases.2

Ooh that's an exciting development!
Make sure you have ground rules in place when you discuss the price, like if you're comfortable for him to bring women/friends back, what amount of housework you'd expect him to do, what he'd need to provide of his own like towels and bedding, if he has internet draining pastimes or TV packages that would need to be taken into cost consideration2 -
I had a fairly productive evening last night - sorted out more in the kitchen than I thought I would. I now have two entirely clear shelves (could possibly clear some more by the time I've finished sorting) - now I need to think about what is best to move where. I also found various kitchen "appliances" that I had forgotten I had, so will think about whether I actually want to keep them or not.
Today's bits and bobs:- Work on crochet pillow cover
- Take leftover pasta to work for lunch
- Re-purpose used candle jar into a cotton bud storage pot (looks much nicer than a box!)
- Parents coming round today to do some bits - dad painting the bedroom and mum cleaning the oven! (I know how lucky I am!)
- Text friend to see if she will have time to cut my hair in the next couple of weeks (she's then having an op so expect will be out of action for a while)
- Update spreadsheet
- Text potential lodger with amount for rent I want
- Dinner from stores
- Netball tonight - will park for free and the cost for the game is in the budget
- Wash hair and let dry naturally
Debt as at 5 June 2023 - £15,600.89
Current debt - £5,935.00
Total paid off - £9,665.89 (61% paid off)5
