Octopus - Octoplus Rewards (points/money off/free electricity)

  • Having signed up for Octoplus however many days ago, I've now received the presumably mass e-mail inviting me to join

However interestingly it does include this tidbit:
    • Plus more rewards to come: we reckon most customers could claim almost £200 of rewards a year just by taking part
I'm not putting any stock in the £200 but I will be interested to see what further things they have in store.  The Octopoints for each reward may not be worth a huge amount by themselves, but like getting pennies in cashback from eBay, it all adds up over time.

Does anyone have any idea how often the free electricity sessions will occur?   It may just be an experiment with one or two free electricity sessions over  the next few months, or they might give us free electricity every time the wholesale price goes negative.  Presumably Octopus would make a profit by supplying lots of negatively priced electricity for free?

If the free electricity sessions are reasonably frequent it may be worth purchasing some smart socket switches to make use of the free energy.  I'm guessing they will be at times when the Agile electricity price is negative - i.e. usually between 2am and 5am - so I will not be jumping out of bed to turn on heaters!
OK so I asked Pete at Octopus.   Unfortunately Pete didn't reply, but a customer service representative gave this information:

"The frequency of the free electricity sessions can vary depending on the wholesale energy market conditions. Octopus Energy aims to provide free electricity during periods when the wholesale price is negative.

While Octopus Energy may make a profit on additional electricity supplied during these sessions, it does not necessarily mean that there will be a free electricity session every time the wholesale price is negative. The availability of free electricity depends on various factors, including market conditions and demand."

Looks like I will have to wait and see what happens next time the Agile price is negative, to try and deduce what these 'various factors' are.

It's dipped into negative territory a couple of times since Octoplus launched, so it seems likely it will need to be a more significant plunge to trigger it. We might be waiting a few months for something like that.

1p earned here - but I was very thick forgetting the battery that we would have been using exclusively at the time of the last savings session.

A bit pointless for me I guess
