  • hai,

I agree with your thought, it's correct only we can keep our pets even in the cheap shelter , this is one of the way to minimize our expenses.More pets are not expect to live in a costly manner, they know love the person who shows care

  • I feed my dog a diet of raw bones - free from the butcher, leftover veggies and raw meat either bought in packs from pet shop or cheap stuff from the supermarket. Chicken wings are excellent and are only about 10p or less each.

I never buy toys for my animals, I recycle old fluffy toys, milk bottles and boxes of all sizes, perfect for rabbits, hamsters, dogs etc.

I dont use shavings for my rabbits, instead I cut up old carpet and use it as their flooring, its great because it doesnt need changing very often.

I feed my rabbits Spillers high fibre horse nuts, it works out about 35p a kg, compared to 95p a kg for normal bunny food.

Buy hay and straw for your small animals in horse sized bales, its much better quality and 10 times cheaper.

Im sure Ill have lots more to post soon.
  • I used to use the shredded paper from all the post I got with my name and address on for bedding for my rats. Its free and better for them than the hay and the shop bought stuff.
  • I bought my daughter a hamster yesterday, does anyone have any ideas on things I can save money on for it? I got all the basics from Pets at home, yet I know after checking online they aren't the cheapest place in the world. They recommended a £2.99 bottle of 'clean & safe' spray stuff for cleaning the cage & insisted nothing else would be safe to use. I use a Tesco antibac type spray that is non tainting in the kitchen (as well as Stardrops :D ) does anyone know if this would be OK to use in a cage. I seem to remember just hot soapy water did the trick in the past  Any tips would be very welcome :)

    Hi Surfing Spaniel
We were always told just to clean out with hot soapy water and make sure any soap suds were rinsed off. Kept ours clean and smell free.

I'm really interested in why cats and dogs need to be immunised or have a booster yearly while children need one or two in a lifetime for most childhood diseases. I've googled away, but can't find any research that has been done on how long animal immunisations remain effective. I'm slightly suspicious that the animal pharmacutical companies wouldn't encourage any such research! Surely a 'once in a lifetime' or 'once every ten years' immunisation could be developed. If anyone has data to back up the need for annual immunisations I'd love to know about it. (I'm not being for or against annual immunisations, just a little cynical!) A friend went to have his cat's annual needle, and because it was 3 weeks over the 12 month period he was advised to start again with a full course - expensive advice!

money saving - i shopped around when my kitten was ready for spaying - it ranged from £42 to £130 - all at reputable vets within a 5 mile radius! Shopping around saved me a fortune.

    Hi Surfing Spaniel

My daughter has a glass tank for her hampster and does use an animal disinfectant spray for cleaning the tank, but 1 spay bottle does last her a long time, she does clean them out weekly.

Her younger sister is getting some hamsters soon, she has a plastic tank, so much lighter to carry about and we'll probably use hot soapy water, rinsed out thoroughly.

ubamother I have to say I think the advice about needing a full course because he missed 3 weeks is definitely bad advice!
Personaly I vaccinate my dog (including rabies for her passport) but my cats haven't been vaccinated for a couple of years. They were vaccinated yearly until they were about 6 - they're now 8.

Where do you buy the James Wellbeloved from? I have looked for this but can't seem to find it.

I also buy my dog soft toys from charity shops. They usually cost from 50p to £1. He likes to rip the faces off!!!!

Buy poo bags in 99p shop. Big pack of them for (yes) 99p!!

You can get James wellbeloved online. I use zooplus.com. You get 10% off your first ordr and if you buy in bulk (over £75 spend) you get a further 5% off each order.

!t's the cheapest online store I've found, you used to be able to get cashback thru Quidco, not sure if you still can.
    Save me from spending...
