  • Hi, when money is short I use shredded paper for bedding for my guinipigs.
or if I have hay and no straw, I use hay for bedding. They eat it immediatly, so needs replenishing daily, but you dont have as much to compost when you clean them out.

Dog food Autarky or Gusto are great and very cheap for premium foods.

talking of making own dog food does anyone have any recipes? I have a puppy and puppy food is soooooooooooo expensive.

Also have three hungry cats to fed.

Wilkinsons is great for offers on pet foods especially the big brands such as pedigree and whiskas I tend to stock up when they have offers on.
    check out their website http://www.wilko.co.uk/products/petcare.htm

vets recommend feeding quality complete pet foods suitable for your pets type, size + lifestage- this is really hard to work out yourself. Good pet food companies spend millions of pounds researching the best ingredients + formulas. You will save money in the longrun by feeding a good quality food to your puppy now- it will get less health probs in the future
ps i know a lady who fed her kitten a home cooked diet because she thought it was better- ended up with metabolic bone disease and stunted growth.

I got my large indoor guinea pig cage from Lidl, it cost £25, it came with hay, woodshavings, waterbottle, house, hay rack and feeding dish. I've seen the same one in a pet shop for £80. Unfortunately you have to keep an eye out for the pet stuff in Lidl. Also got car harnesses for my dogs out of Lidl for £1.99, they are padded and comfortable for the dogs!
I also feed BARF diet to my dogs, there is a website Barfworld.com which details the diet. I find it's cheaper and the dogs are much better for it.

I have a house rabbit and he just loves cardboard boxes. Used to buy him expensive toys to chew, now he just gets the boxes from any deliveries we get. He loves hopping in and out of them and chewing them to bits and I don't care how quickly he chews them as I am not worried about how much they cost.

my house rabbit and outside rabbit/guinea pig like loo/kitchen roll insides. fruit boxes from supermarkets the ones with holes in put inside each other to make a box with 2 holes in make great hidey-holes. dog balls with all the holes in get stuffed with hay and lettuce and keep them busy. big old plant pots for the outsiders turned on the sides get thrown about, they go in them and on them and around them! my outside rabbit likes ripping up whole newspapers.
  • First post, hello to everyone!
In answer to message #5 there is a national microchipping week, (not sure when),when your vet may offer it cheaper, also try the RSPCA or other charities to see if they offer reduced prices.

I am a strong believer in pet insurance, as even the smallest thing can turn out very expensive. Maybe I am just unlucky  but our three cats would have to live to very ripe old ages for the premiums we pay (approx £5/month/cat) to cover their treatments to date!

I also have a horse and he is insured with NFU mutual, who gave me a reduction in my premium this year for not claiming last year.

Great tips re buying Frontline and drontal online, will definately be looking into that.

Also surprised no-one has mentioned Whiskas also do a kitten pack with free food samples and coupons.

Wow frontline online. Really? The ruddy stuff costs a fortune at teh vets, and they insist on seeing the animals once a year, which sticks on a consultation fee every 12 mths too, before I can even buy the stuff.. What a rip off!

Any links to Frontline online, please?
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
