Hi Hambrook,
I use Jolleys own dry food for my border collie, it's £15 for 15kg and is based on natural ingredients. I was using Burns but was told this is just as good.
It sometimes has freebies of fish pieces in the bag so that's a bonus!
It's the orange bag for adult dogs as there's a senior and puppy pack as well.
His coat is really shiny and he's as fit as a fiddle, so no complaints from me or my dog :jWe have a 17 months old English Springer Spaniel !!!!!, been on Purina Beta all her life. Bags of energy. £23 for 15kg at Jolleys and have been wondering if there are cheaper generic feeds. Springer runs nons stop twice a day, feeding 400g a day and still not an ounce of fat on her.
"Working dog food" sounds interesting but am reluctant to move off Beta or to give it to her as she clearly needs and burns the calories. Anyone used this or the Jolleys own dry mix on a Spaniel / working dog?0 -
You can get individual tins of all cat foods at your local Co-op!My cats love corks. No idea why, forget the shop-bought toys, corks do it for them! (And keeping them supplied with corks is no hardship!!;) )
Big bags of catnip (I get ours from either one of those cheap sell everything places or the garden centre's pet department). Use and old rolled up sock with catnip in it and happy drugged up cat happy for weeks  and can be refreshed just by keeping it in the same drawer as the catnip! I tried growing it once, but it didn't last long enough.
Ours also love boxes to sleep in, not purpose bought beds and especially a wicker 'hamper' given to us at Christmas with goodies in.
Basically, I don't bother with buying them anything from the shop except food and catnip.
I am very annoyed that supermarkets have stopped selling individual cans of food, I once counted 14 varieties (more variation than I get!) but now they only do the 6 or 12 packs and the flavours are all the same. Our cats tend to off flavours for a while and it is difficult finding alternatives. Does anyone know where I can get individual cans with a variety of flavours? Whiskas and Kitekat, they won't touch Felix since the 'new improvement'.
Cheers

Morrisons still sell some single tins of cat food. I buy some of my pet food from Home Bargains. My dog loves the Hi life chew which is 79p in there and £1.29 in the supermarket. The cat loves the Brekkies Delice at 59p which is much cheaper than Go Cat.0

Dear Animal lovers. I research nutrition for my family and now latterly for my pets. a 37 year career of caring. dogs and cats really love raw meat. A good tablespoon of preferably organic mince or a nice bone from the butcher , raw chopped fish for cats, chicken wings, raw . this is recommended by homeopathic and naturopathic vets. in expensive but good 'higher nature' magazine for vitamin and mineral suppliers.get as good a source of raw food going for them as possible. Even if you cook it you can buy whole frozen meat and fish in value sections and occasssionally inorganic. get a good variety of food, raw egg , cheese, leftover vegetables going for them. even vets will try to flog their hgih profit dried stuff.Animals are like us they don't want sterilized tins of poor ill treated dead horses and others.Capitalism really doesn't care about the things which mean the most to us. our health and thehealth of the planet.:T
this will prevent your animal coming up with nasty organ failures as they age or even before. Food manufacturers animal and human want us to spend highly on cheap ingredients. they will v aunt an interest in health only if it profits highly.
We have to wake up to our responsibility for our animals and our own health.Animals are like us, food is medicine, good wholesome food, needn't be expensive. a spoonful of raw mince could be as little as 50p. a healthy animal and no vet bills. look up herbs too, they grow wild and free and have ingredients which would cost a fortune in health food shops. linda0 -
well i have two dogs and each friday i feed them cooked brown rice and .... either pilchards, around 53 p tin or mince (raw). the rest of the time i use iams, which is expensive, hence the friday evening cheapie, the vet said the are fantasticly healthy on it so, thought i'd pass it on. also my cats eat the same if they feel like it, or catch their own , euw! sometimes they bring in takeaway for the dogs too, gross!! but so far , all are very healthy, regarding litter for the cats, i use paper from my shredder. but usually they only use the tray if trapped inside, catflaps seem to be paying for themselves.totally debt free:j and mortgage free too 20100

HOLIDAY TIME
If, like me you have a few pets that require being put in to a kennel or cattery whilst you are away then it may be worth you looking at the cost of a house and pet sitter for the duration of your holiday.
Our local kennels charge £10 per day for dogs and £5 for cats so with 2 dogs and three cats that came to £35 per day ......... then there were the four pet sheep, Ronnie and Reggie the Ravens, two horses and the donkey to take care of as well !!!
The house sitter (fully insured) charged £40 per day for taking care of ALL the animals (including exercising the horse) AND minding the house - she even washed all her own bedding, remade the bed and made sure there was fresh bread and milk ready for us on our return.
All pets were happy to be together and in their own surroundings and for us this was by far a more cost effective way of taking care of our animals whilst we were away.0 -
I have just become the proud owner of two 9 week old kittens. I am going to allow them outside when they are old enough so they will need thier injections in the next week or so.
Ive had some quotes from local vets and the quotes average at about £38.00per kitten. The quotes were for both the 9 week and twelve week vacinations and there was also an extra charge of about £10.00 each for feline leukimia if i wanted it.
I thought that this was all pretty pricey but these are my first cats so i have no experience of these things.
My BF family say that thier cats and kittens were never vaccinated and they were all fine but i dont know if the risk is worth it just in case, especially when there are so many other cats in out area.
Is it worth having it done? and does that seem to be a normal amount to pay?0 -
We have a collar that stops our dog barking that lets out a little beep. It takes 3 watch size batteries that were costing £5 each at the shop, a total of £15 each time. They don't last more than a month or so either, so you can see the cost involved. I went onto ebay and found the same batteries for 10p each from China. That's just 2% of the cost down the shop. A fantastic saving for anyone in the same position. Hope this helps. :j0

My old cat used to love the tins of pilchard in tomato sauce.
Also have just received an order from vetUK, can't recommend them enough - fantastic service!
