Beem & Sam(my 2 labs) are fed dried food with a bit of veg water added, plus they have a cod liver oil tablet once a day with food, Beem is a black lab and his coat is shining!

I always save the veg water or rice water that I've cooked in and add it to their meals.

With regards to bedding I scour the charity shops for 2nd hand duvets and bedding (try and use PDSA shops) also tell all my friends not to throw any bedding/towels away, I buy cheap duvet covers to go with them so that I can wash the covers when they get mucky.

Toy wise I keep empty plastic milk/tonic bottles and put a few biscuits in, they have hours of fun with them.

If one of them is having a dickey tummy day I boil up cheap rice and add some cheap fish (Coley) to it and they are soon up and running again.

    STORING DOG FOOD

We buy dogfood in 15Kg bags. Old ones had zip top, but new food doesn't. It's stored in large swing top bin, but kitchen is starting to smell. Has anyone come across cheap airtight storage bins this size? Special ones sold in pet shops are expensive.

Had a similar problem with 5 cats but with us it was various open bags depending on their needs. Our solution was to use an unwanted cool box for it all which is pretty close to being airtight and the handle locks over to stop thieving paws! A cheap way of buying is car boot or ebay - look for one that no longer "works" as a fridge and advertised as spares/repair. Should get one for a few pounds plus postage.

My local sainsbury's quite often has the perfect fit on promotion, i get it for my 2 cats for a change now and again, they usually have James wellbeloved.

Yes I agree with that - it tends to be on offer for 3 weeks in about every 12 weeks. If it helps, all Sainsburys change their offers on a Tuesday night and I believe the last changeover was on 27 Feb.

Anyone know whether Lidl and Wilkinsons do good dry cat food for senior cats? I'm trying to cut the cost of cat food as I have three cats, but would like to keep them on good senior food as they are 11 years old and I want them to stay healthy as long as possible.

Was in Lidl and Wilkinson yesterday but there didn't seem to be any I would use.

  • Had a scan through but too many posts to read properly!

My best peice of advice for keeping doggie tip-top is give them fresh fruit and veg as well as doggie foods. Our Skye loves sweet peppers, we use these as training treets too - she will do anything you ask for slice of juicy pepper. She also loves plums, kiwi fruit, potatoes, tomatoes, beetroot, sometimes some banana.......And its all better for her than packaged doggie treats, cheaper for us too!

Remember dogs need a varied healthy fresh diet too!

But DO NOT give dogs onions or chocolate (it can be very dangerous), i was shocked to hear of people buying dogs their own easter eggs and so on.

I agree with OP regarding keeping food in a cool box, have always done this, food keeps fresh and no smells! as soon as I reach for the cool box Beamish is jumping on all 4's like Tigger on Drugs..LOL

Sam the yellow lab could quite happily be a veggie as he loves all raw fruit & Veg and he any kind of fish is to die for.

Again a WARNING do not feed your dog chocolate...it can be fatal....dogs and chocolate do not mix! they DO NOT need a Easter Egg, your better off giving them a raw egg rather than a chocolate one!

OO i knew about choccy being poisenous to them, but not onions.
  • Yep....due to toxins harmful to dogs (and cats) but not humans. Here are a few more:

DO NOT ANY OF THE FOLLOWING TO YOUR PET (especially cats or dogs):

    -chocolate
    -Onions
    -Macademia Nuts
    -Garlic
-Pear pips, the kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple core pips (contain cyanogenic glycosides resulting in cyanide posioning)
-Potato peelings and green looking potatoes
    -Rhubarb leaves
    -Mouldy/spoiled foods
    -Alcohol
    -Yeast dough
-Coffee grounds, beans & tea (caffeine)
    -Hops (used in home brewing)
-Tomato leaves & stems (green parts)
    -Broccoli (in large amounts)
    -Raisins and grapes
    -Cigarettes, tobacco, cigars

(Lol, have to laugh about the last one but i suppose there are some idiots out there that may a doggy a ciggie!)

Don't know about these two but Aldi sell a range of dry cat food including pedigree and senior. Our two cats really love the senior version (they are both 12 this year) and are thriving on it.

As already said Aldi do a good dry food range. My two get the 'Premium Breed' dry food as it is reccommended for indoor cats. They also have Aldi's vitacat pouches. They love the food from Aldi!
