I went to my nearest Nationwide to pay in a cheque as they don't allow cheque deposits in app. The staff in Colwyn Bay branch were not helpful and told me I should use the atm outside (in the rain). They weren't interested. Now with Lloyds and better app, better customer service, better all round
Was this for a FlexDirect account? If so, technically they would be correct to point you to the ATM in that case. (It doesn't stop it being terrible customer service.)

If you hold a different account then personally I'd get an official complaint in - since branch use is (weirdly) supposedly a perk of these accounts over FlexDirect.

    ...

I'd be inclined to then ask which of their instant access savings accounts can be opened in branch and would accept a cheque deposit which could then be transferred online/by App to my FlexDirect account.

...Fully expecting them to say (regardless of how underemployed they were at the time) that accounts can only be opened by appointment.

The non-use of branches for the FlexDirect account is now one of Nationwide's more bizarre policies. Maybe it made sense when branches were packed out with people transacting on other types of current account, but now Nationwide have set themselves up as the champion of branch banking it looks odd for staff to be telling members they can't use the in-branch service for something as simple as paying in a cheque (especially given their failure to add that as a feature to the app)

On a related note, it seems Nationwide have launched another new TV advert. Similar to and equally as unpleasant as the previous one.
  • I’m not sure how they can say they aren’t closing branches, both the ones local to me have been closed. Got the new update for the app today, though I like that it now has debits and credits in different colours, it’s otherwise bloody awful. Why they have mess with everything anyway I don’t know. I’m all for improvements but changing things for no reason is annoying.

They're not saying they have never closed branches, which would be provably untrue - they've shut hundreds in the last decade. They're saying they're not shutting their branches (until 2026).

    Not quite.

They say "everywhere" we have a branch, we promise to still be there until at least 2026*.

That doesn't preclude closing all but one branch in any town or city where there is currently more than one.

And they say "There may be circumstances outside of our control that mean we have to close a branch. But we will only do this if we don’t have another workable option".

So plenty of scope for leases coming to an end, or landlords putting rent up, to mean there isn't a "workable option" to retain a branch.
Fair, but I think the most obvious get out is it's only for another 22 months, which isn't much in the scheme of things.

New app doesnt look very good!!!!!
Also, I requested statements for some closed savings accounts, I had to order them all by post, and they couldnt go into them so I could not just order the 2/3 I wanted, it had to be all of them. No option of online access or pdf it has to be 10 day wait in the post.
I received loads of statements I didnt need two weeks later, and just today I have received 13 separate letters telling me my request for statement cant be done as the dates requested arent available.
They have become a joke now I'm afraid.

I looked at this and thought they’d put pictures of NatWest in at first. How someone signed off on colours and branding so similar is beyond me
