Utilities will freeze the account so no need for executors to pay these personally

    Thanks Sue.
the utilities will all have to be left on just to keep house secure, dry, etc
so is it best to only notify them of death, after probate granted, and house on the market, which according to this thread could be 6 months or more ?

No exactly the opposite. You need to tell them straight away so they don’t bill you but wait until probate is granted. They won’t cut off the supply but will stop sending bills or worrying letters because they’ve not been paid.

This, plus both BT and water stopped adding new charges, we only had to pay what was owing at date of death.

  • Hello all new to this board, my mother passed away in late Dec'22, applied probate  28th January'23, we are now 35 weeks into the process. Fairly simple Will no property just cash to equally divide amongst 2 other siblings. Ring up nearly every 2 weeks after 16 weeks transpired, sent in two complaints, saying its with a specialist team because of the "condition of the Will" bearing in mind drawn up by our solicitor so all legal and above board, so asked to speak to this team and you can't, this team is apparently small!, no timelines can be given, the online update does not work. Not only are you still grieving from the loss this just add to the mental strain it puts on people and prolongs the grieving process as you don't have any closure. Its the lack of communication and the silence for weeks on end is what is draining and having to chase is exhausting. Taken it to my Local MP now lets see what happens.

Yes ask your MP to intervene that will get them moving
  • If it takes this long to get probate, how are bills for a house left in will to be sold, get paid, council tax, etc.?
bank ac,s will have been frozen , are executors supposed to pay for it all , out of their own pocket and claim it back when probate is granted, and that’s just the starting gun being fired.
house could be empty for up to 6-12 months, before marketing by all the posts I have read here.
Also, if property is left vacant for 6-12 months, the water should be drained (taps open) and turned off at the mains

executor shouldn't pay anything until probate is finally granted

That is awful.  Ours went in end of June, looked at 2 weeks ago, needed another piece of information which they received about 10 days ago, who knows how long it'll be now 🤷‍♀️ as you say it just prolongs everything especially after 3 dreadful years of Dad with severe dementia, it is, I agree mentally draining.  Hope you have resolutions soon.

Week 23 registry office uploaded the SOT's to their system the other day. I've been informed the worst case scenario wait time for consideration of probate would be 3 weeks.... I've got a feeling these next 3 weeks are going to drag and seem like months
