Hi @Jenni_D
As in my post above, there is now a permanent link to the preference page in the Quick Links drop-menu.
That way, we have a clearly-labelled link in the very menu that might be annoying the user, and they're most likely to see it after accidentally activating a few times
(We haven't put it in both drop-downs because that would make the already biggest Categories menu even bigger)Join the MSE Forum

As a little pro-tip (well, actually just pointing out an accidental quirk of the hide fix
), even if you've hidden the menu, you can still bring it back temporarily on the page you're viewing by toggling the Search Icon on and off

The fix works fine but I don't really see the need for Quick Links in the menu bar as it is shown on the right hand side of the treads?0

If you are using a narrower screen, or some tablets, you will often be in a view where the sidebar has isn't shown and Quick Links are instead at the very bottom of threads.
Since the side-menu only kicks in on smaller mobile screens, the menu bar is your primary navigation.
This is why our default has to be showing the menu and hiding it can only be offered as an additional option.Join the MSE Forum

Just found this after weeks of struggling with the drop down menu getting in my way. Thankyou!!! Very happy now1

What a relief!!0

What absolute heaven! Thank you so much. I came to the feedback subforum because I'd finally had enough of this menu springing in to action every time I came back to the tab and borking out, following me down as I scrolled the page.
edit - Oh no, spoke too soon! Seems like this is a cookie-based fix of some sort, so as soon as I clear cookies or log back in the fix has to be performed again, and as someone who regularly clears cookies many times a day, this is a pointless style of fix for me. Unfortunate. Hopefully a real in-forum option can be added to turn off this feature rather than just a cookie hotfix on the user side. Fingers crossed.1 -
Why was this "hiding" option implemented? If it was to solve false triggering (flying out when you don't want it to, so it then obscures content you want to see) then best practice is basically not to do it in the first place, particularly if the menu is near (but not at) the top of the screen.
If you insist on having onHover menus, then at least put in a delay (eg 2-300ms) so that if the user is merely passing over them on the way to something else, the menu doesn't immediately trigger and cause the frustration.
MSE's use of a "hide this" is not a convention most people will expect or even understand.0 -
