He got a bill in May 2022 that you think had the wrong opening reading.  Ok, there's a fact.  And you have a timestamped photo with a different reading.  Good.  If you also had his tenancy/purchase contract showing that these photos were when he first moved in, even better.

He waited until there was an alleged £6000 debt in May 2023 before making a complaint or requesting a correction of the opening reading.  That is not good.

Having had a bill for the energy, this might mean that the 12 month rule for billing doesn't actually apply at all and nothing gets written off.

As we've told you several times now - it's not about "feeling sorry for" anyone.  It's about finding out actually what happened, actually what the debt should be, actually how the rules of backbilling will apply.

We are trying to help you get the case in the best possible light for the complaint, and help you understand what the actual situation is.

We could all just sit here saying "ooh, isn't it sad" - but that wouldn't help you.

The facts are that in April may 23 he provided his 3 readings as usual and then got a bill for £950 to pay in 7 days and then got a refund of £950 which we couldn’t understand then the bill went from £50/100 in credit to £2000 in debit and then kept rising to £6000 in last fortnight, so not exactly what you are picturing  ( the bit you said is not good)
what I don’t understand is why his first bill mentioning the off peak reading is June 2023 so why going back to may2021/22 when he had a fixed contract that expired in may22, so why the no billing for backdating doesn’t apply . ( when a fixed term contract is ended that should be the end of it)
the feeling sorry bit for me doesn’t bother me but the help provided is greatly appreciated .
the actual feelings regarding the ombudsman input  after readings all of you is not exactly showing there is a point of pursuing that route.

You have posted a photograph of a bill in May 2022 that contains the off-peak reading in both July 2021 and May 2022.

Sorry to contradict you but the first bill showing the off peak reading is jan-March 2023 that is where the £950 payment occurred and then all the next bills showed the off peak reading or provided or estimates, I went to all the bill from 2021 nothing, the readings estimates or provided have been added from March bill 2023

as you can see may 22 and July bill don’t show off peak reading, eon has added backdated readings and estimates from march 23 bill, strange and worrying that they can produce those types of bills.

I've just tried reading the whole post again and I'm not entirely sure I understand the issue. Am I right in thinking that

    a) your son was giving three meter readings every time since he moved in, but was only getting bills with two meter read/billings on instead?

    b) the direct debit wasn't high enough to cover those two readings so there was debt building even without the third reading missing from the bills?

    c) it was only this year that the energy company worked out there was a third meter reading they should have been charging for, but they had been ignoring his third reading?

Jyana, correct on the 3 points
csi -Yorkshire , when my son argued his case with e on he sent again all his readings photo evidence ( I think 97 of them) then they billed him again with a wrong opening reading not the one he provided ( extra 10000 units) and issued a 10/12 pages bills with some accurate readings he provided and some estimates ( why ) . At the end of the day the final reading in July is correct (99700) but not starting one ( not 71148 but 81539) DESPITE that they are not budging and all previous bills for 20/24 months were wrong and NEVER showed the off peak reading until the January to march 2023 FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. AND NONE AT EON WHEN I CONTACTED THEM CAN GIVE ME AN OFF PEAK RATE ( mentioning that since 2021 they don’t have any anymore only 2 at the maximum) just to add more difficulties to understand and resolve this issue. Thanks

So all these photographs are from the new replacement bills?

And we know E.ON (and most other suppliers) don't do three-reading tariffs much any more, that's not confusing us.

If I have this right after all these pages, the problem is that Eon have the wrong opening reading for the off-peak and your son has photograpic proof of the correct reading. Eon didn't realise for 2 years that this reading should be included in the bills and your son didn't directly contact them to point out their mistake.

So your complaint to the ombudsman should state these simple facts and include the timestamped photos of all 3 opening meter reads.
