Is it an unfair term that a contract has to be cancelled 30 days before the end?

You must give them 30days notice, otherwise you will pay penalty or something like that, BUT:
ask for PAC code for your sim, buy any sim and transfer number, then your contract is finished.
When it works:
Your contract is due to finish on 06.09.2023 but you forgot about it and you gave 30days notice today, so still you need to pay 30days out of your contract, usually higher rate, you're not bond with contract anymore, BUT you're bond with leaving note (30days), so, instead of leaving notice, ask for PAC code, as soon as you transfer your number day after your contract finished then your contract will be terminated without 30days notice, without any fee. Simple and legal, but they won't tell you that.0 -
I think you are misunderstanding the op
the op wants to stick with the three year contract but give notice that at the end of that contract they want to leave
three currently require you to do this within 30 days of the end. the op wants to do it within 60 or 90 days of the end or whatever but still say they want to complete the three year contract but end it after the three years are up0 -

The airtime/data contract is separate, maximum 2 years, and presumably this is the contract you are grumbling about. There's no point giving more than 30 days notice because you will not be able to line up a new contract with a different provider more than 30 days in advance.
This explains: Are 36 month phone contracts worth the risk? How to avoid paying more for a mobile phone - Which? News
My issue is that I will forget and would rather tell them now. I would go to pay as you go…..0 -

Doesn’t mean it’s a term that’s fair.

What can you not do 3 months before the minimum period ends regardless of whether notice has been given or not?

You think it's fairer to the consumer to be locked into a three month notice period (or even longer) than 30 days?
Thats just laughable...====2 -
I think everybody is misunderstanding the OP here
what they are saying is as follows:
suppose for example I have a contract for 24 months that ends on the 31st of December
the contract says I can only give notice to end it 30 days beforehand i.e on the 30th of November
what the OP is saying is why can't I give notice on the 5th of July or 2 February that I want to end the contract on the 31st of December - why do I have to wait until 30 days beforehand before giving this notice1 -

What you are advocating is having a 6 months or 11 months notice period.
If the OP is concerned that they will not remember to give notice when the minimum period is 30 days away, what are the chances of remembering that they gave notice 11 months ago and not being surprised when the service ends and the number goes away.
The service is designed to continue under the contract once the minimum period has concluded. Most people do not want their service to just stop and their number to offski.2
