    That's quite a wide variance!

As long as the meter has actually arrived and IS being tested, I'd be happier that they're taking their time with it, for such an incremental issue.

I've done a good bit of digging on this issue, I submitted a FOI to the OPSS for a list of all the makes and models of gas meters that have failed testing. However they wouldn't release it, I took the matter to the ICO who ruled that the OPSS can keep this list secret from the public.

I asked the national grid who own these meters if they do any testing themselves, they said they don't and will only take action if the manufacturer reports a defect to them.

I'm surprised the ombudsman said they would be able to pickup on any trends of faulty meters since not all faulty meter cases go through the ombudsman they won't have all the data. If this is the safeguard to identifying common meter issues then the data processing itself is faulty. I bet if you asked for any data on this they won't be able to give it to you.

It seems the whole system is designed to prevent the public from uncovering any data that might suggest a common problem exists.

I believe this is by design to ensure no scandals happen that might undermine confidence in energy metering.

The fact that meters go missing on the way to be tested is also disturbing.

You’ve pretty much summed it up, it all used to be be very carefully monitored and any faults that developed caused the affected meters to be withdrawn from service. I doubt the same controls are in place today.

I chased EDF on where the test was at and got a very nice call today from someone who actually took the time to explain that they're still chasing the test team, getting no responses, have escalated etc.

She wan't to speak rather than just fire off another email. She also said they wanted the issue resolved at their end.

So, no further forward, but at least comms channels are a bit better. Of course, it could turn out the faulty meter has gotten lost at the test centre, hence the silence at that end...

Oh I’m so pleased - even though you knew what was going on it must have been unnerving that there was a risk it would not behave the same in test conditions/meter was never tested before destroyed or whatever. Now at least you have literal proof that you’ve basically been gaslighted by a gas meter! 😆

Over 18 months since I first asked EDF to get my gas meter tested, I have the results. Here's an excerpt, with the pertinent sentences bolded by me:

Credit electronic meter serial number, manufactured by Landis + Gyr Model E6V in 2004, having a maximum working capacity of 6 cubic metres per hour, and an index reading of xxx cubic meters was submitted by EDF Energy for re-examination as a dispute between:-

    <snip>

I hereby certify that this meter was examined on 20/02/2024, under the provisions of the Gas Act 1986, and was found to be so defective that it could not be examined for conformity with the standards prescribed by paragraph (1) (ec) (i) and (ii) of regulation 3 of the Gas (Meters) Regulations 1983. The wording of this standard is shown on the reverse of this certificate.

    Remarks
The register incremented in the no flow condition, index readings unreliable.

I never doubted it, but its good to have it in writing. EDF will (or soon will) have received the same letter, then the negotiations begin.

It shouldn't have been so stressful and painful. Congratulations!

Don’t forget to mention all those months you were working abroad 😁

Scarily there are so many others out there paying for gas they are not using.

    Fantastic!
Indeed I wonder just how many others of these meter are doing the same... Just how would you notice?
