Chase Banking App, terrible?

  • No issues on a cheap Motorola g31. Was fine on android 11 and still fine on recent update to version 12. Takes no more than 2-3 seconds for data to load. Might be helped by the fact the device is used exclusively for banking purposes, only 16 banking apps installed.
  • I think it's got worse. Sometimes I open the app and no matter how long I leave it the balances don't update. Kill the app, reopen and it's just fine. So why doesn't it work one minute but does the next? If it was the phone then surely it would struggle all the time.
I've seen this myself - I think this relates to having the app open and then coming out of it, and going back in.

Resolved as you say, but closing down and then reopening.

The app is bloody awful, compared to things like the Lloyds group (Lloyds, halifax etc) or Monzo which I think are the measuring sticks imo

The app works fine for me, no issues at all. Maybe the reason that some of you are finding it sluggish, is because you have a sluggish phone or internet connection
  • A13 Pixel Experience. The app can be slow to update balances on first launch. I've also found that the app frequently hangs for a minute or two when trying to send a payment, commonly before the PIN entry screen should appear.

Works fine on my iPhone 13 (and on previous iPhone 7 Plus), way faster than HSBC app which tells me I have been signed out every time and I have to go back and try again then it works - I always sign out of it when leaving.
The only time I ever get some slight lag is on my monthly transfer from HSBC to Chase which is instant but then transferring into my 10 savings pots it can sometimes take a few seconds to catch up, and again on first of month when I transfer all interest from every pot to the savings pot.
It literally catches up in less than 10 seconds.

  • I have 6 banking apps. Chase is the fastest, and easiest to use. Never had an issue with it. Using Android, pixel 6.
First direct is the worst. Once the regular saver finishes , I'll use that for a switch .
  • I doubt if the Chase app (or the backend server feeding it) is significantly slower that other bank's apps.

Seems that most developers would take care to populate the display fields on a screen before presenting it to the phone user. You'll find that other apps take just as long to get to the home page but will show you a "Working" page before getting there.

    Barclays is particularly pretty.

You just don't see the update process happening unlike on the Chase app and so don't perceive the process to be slow.
  • Another issue with Chase, and the way the app works, this morning.

I don't keep a lot of money in the Chase current account, and just move money in when I know I'm going to be making a payment. My car was in for MOT, first thing this morning I had a little less than £9 in my account. Went to meet colleagues for coffee, and on the way in I transferred £200 from a Chase savings account to my current accout.

No problem paying for coffee, that was £3.90. Went to pick up my car, tried to pay for the MOT using Google Wallet, payment declined. Notification from the app that it was declined due to insufficient funds.

Chase would not let me make a payment in excess of around £4.50 until I had opened the app again and the current balance had updated.

I'm beginning to think it's more trouble than it's worth.

Well I don't know if it's just me but for the last few days when I've tried to log in I keep repeatedly getting a banner at the bottom of the screen saying "We couldn't get your info Try again"

On top of that I can't amend any existing scheduled payments or schedule a new payment, yet I can make an instant payment

Done the usual, reboot, updates, force stops, different internet connections and nothing changes

I've gone down the route of live chat with one of their "Rent-a-customer advisors", which was an exercise in futility

You know you're on to a loser when they ask you what resolution you're looking for - "If the sodding app worked the way it should, that would be a good start"

I've had my fair share of struggles with Chase and their app since they started and I've always sort of felt like a beta tester for an unpolished piece of software, but now I'm only getting 4.1% interest compared to Kroo's 4.35%, I think I'll make the effort to move everything over to them and give them a chance
  • I recently switched in to Chase and this was the first month for direct debits so I was slightly anxious that it may not run smoothly.  I got paid yesterday (hooray!) and checked my chase ap to make sure my direct debits had been taken, and they hadn't!  I checked again a couple of times throughout the morning by logging in and out and still nothing.  I called Chase at lunch time because I was really starting to worry that my mortgage and council tax hadn't been paid, and they told me they had, the ap just hadn't updated.

I am now switching back out and just would not recommend them at all, they have even made the switch a faff this morning and blocked it!
