I did a dishwasher load and measured energy usage. It used 1.566 Kwh

Is this normal , low or high ?
    That's normal.
3 bed det. built 2021. 2 occupants at home all day. Worcester Bosch Greenstar 30i combi boiler heating to 19-20C from 6am to midnight, setback to 17.5C overnight, connected in EMS mode to Tado smart modulating thermostat. Annual gas usage 6000kWh; electricity 2000kWh.
  • A few days ago I did notice my Xbox was still plugged in but not switch on (on standby ) so I unplugged it.

Also I useually had my televisions plugged in all the time, so I unplugged them when not in use (also unplugged them at night before I goto bed )

This reduced my avarage daily use from approx 7Kwh to 5Kwh

An xBox Series or One console will use around 15w constantly when Sleep Mode and 0.4-0.5w when off, but not unplugged. A modern smart TV which is connected via WiFi will use 15-30w when off but in standby, if it is connected via ethernet that will be around 10w lower. Turning a TV off at the wall/unplugging it is not great for it, they are not build around that. If it is an OLED then turning it off at the wall/unplugging it will harm it's colour balance and shorten it's lifespan. At most they should have reduced your usage by 1.3kWh per day, though likely less than 1kWh.

I can't be bothered to read back the 6 pages but the fact your first action was not to turn off everything in the house except essentials like fridge freezer/internet etc means you do not have a baseline for your property.

Did no one suggest going room by room and turning everything off first?

Not been able to repro the origina probleml, so turning off everything to get baseline won't help.

As I wait for problem to reproduce I am just checking devices energy usage for anywhere I can cut costs.

My Dishwasher uses about the same on a 'full' 65°c cycle.
The 55°c 'Eco' cycle doesn't actually seem to use much less, the 45°c 'quick' cycle uses about half.

One of the bigger reductions we made in our daily average usage each week was to switch most dishwasher loads to quick. It does require giving any heavily soiled dishware a quick rinse in the sink before it goes in, and a full wash is still necessary at least once a week for sanitisation, but stuff comes out just as clean and the energy saving adds up.

Wash dishes before putting them in the dishwasher? isn't technology great.

PcGamers - we have one in our house. After an eye watering bill, it was discovered that the settings on the graphics card could be 'dialled down' without too much loss of function. However, after an install of something or other - the graphics card reverted to some factory settings. Fortunately as the electricity usage in our house is watched intently - the change was spotted and dealt with. On this energy consumption journey we learned early on that 'old habits die hard' (especially amongst those with no responsibility for paying the bill)  and once you do you big audit and adjustments, its then important to stay vigilant.

Really depends on the model of the dishwasher I imagine. I’ve always found a simple plate scraping to be quite adequate for my dishes before letting the machine handle the rest.

Even after accounting for electric, water use, dishwasher tablets, and a small allowance for salt & rinse aid, my dishwasher on off-peak energy still comes out cheaper than washing up by hand with hot water, and it will get everything far cleaner than if I’d done it manually. And that’s before considering the time/convenience factor of not actually having to do the washing up.

I'd always thought a dishwasher was a more expensive convenience over handwashing since handwashing you just fill a tub with hot water and wash all your dishes in it

Do you have any figures on this ?
