The fact you are having doubts shows its not the right one for you. Don't proceed, you will find another house.

Personally for us our last move up house would not be on a flight path.
  • Each to their own, after living in a flat based in the city, I feel like I can block out most noises but when we first moved in I would be banging my head against the wall trying to drain it out, when I originally noticed I felt like I was on edge waiting and listening out for it.

All I would say is if you're not used to it and have noticed it already it could be a warning sign.

You may get used to it but that's a tricky one to predict.

Hard decisions, wish you all best!

That’s a tricky question because everyone is different.  I am very fond of planes so it wouldn’t bother me.  Years ago I lived under the flight path of Concorde, we used to go out and look at it, such a lovely sight.  Where I live now there are helicopters flying over quite a lot, they don’t bother me.
Ditto!  6pm on a Saturday evening, IIRC!

Relatives have a house right under a flightpath - planes are directly ahead and so low you can see the rivets. Frankly, I hardly notice it after 10 minutes. I would far rather have this than a busy main road - the noise is intermittent, brief and stops overnight.

But - you have to decide what you can compromise on. I won't say no house is perfect, I am sure they exist, but I bet they cost more than this one!
    Free is my favourite price!

Thanks everyone for your kind replies.

We went there and sit in the garden for a while.. most of them r ok, not too low 3000ft.. occasionally jumbo jets r loud enough to stop conversation and wait for it to pass, quick though couple of seconds.. just every 10 min there is plan over, it can be exhausting if you r out in the garden. We live 1 mile away can hear it when wind is easterly, it is just about to notice it.

hard one…really love the house and garden. So much money and last big house ..

I imagine that the house is priced accordingly - i.e. it's cheaper than other similar houses, because of the flight noise.

Maybe that's why you like the house so much... it's a nicer house than you could normally afford, but it's fallen into your budget range because of the flight noise.

If so, I guess you have to decide between a nicer bigger house with flight noise, or a less nice smaller house without flight noise.

The funny thing is - it’s not priced accordingly!
That area 1 Mile away from my place how we has risen price dramatically due to stations on Elizabeth line. It’s big / huge garden as the area wasn’t that popular before so less overcrowded development. When we raised flight noise to the sellers, they said they hardly noticed. Talking to friends who live there, mostly true. Either they r used to it, or just not doing research beforehand. If we were not viewing it on the days of 30%, or stumbled across whole looking at another property which turned out not on the flight path, we would have proceeded without realising it. Was told it goes get worse in summer when weather is nicer and you r out and and about enjoying the outdoor space.

It’s sort of similar price level comp to where  I am (not under flight path). Where we r there r fewer stocks of larger size properties. We would have to wait wait wait .. then might lose out to Chainfree buyers.. that has happened multiple times.

My OH said he can get used to, me maybe.
As u all point out - it’s a tricky one to predict! Alternative we would need to wait for a house much smaller garden in our local area. At the least kids won’t need to move schools.

At the moment, we r reluctant to proceed as we have buyers which have buyers, don’t want to waste ppl money unless we r certain about the purchase. Last time we had doubts about a house, we dropped out at the end.

the heart said - I love it and maybe I would have to get used to it. Compromise on the location and flight noise for the large size house + unusually large garden.

the head said - wait for right one locally, might not have big garden the house will still be ok enough for us, kids can still walk to school. No need to change schools.

    🙈😫
  • Where is it? I also live under the LHR flightpath being a few miles south west of the airport. Depending on the wind we mostly take offs which are quieter than landings - landings affect the areas immediately east and west of the airports (Hounslow, Wraysbury), once you head a bit more north or south it gets quieter again as the planes are less concentrated and are higher.

We get planes overhead pretty frequently during the day but I can't hear them any more. One of my friends lives in Hounslow and you can practically see the writing on the bottom of the planes as they head over to land but they say they don't hear them any more either.

when I was a student I spent a fair number of weekends down near the Thames just where at the M4 bridge. Not that far from Heathrow either. The most annoying noise was actually from disco boats coming down the river in the evenings.

Wouldn't bother me, but as PP, I used to live under the flight path of concorde amongst others.
