Dad can register a birth on his own is he is married (and nowadays that would include a cp). Mr S registered both of ours as I was in hospital with both for a week after they were born.

Yes a dad can register on his own if he is married or in CP with the birth mother.   There would still only be one signature on the register/certificate.
But if it's the OP's Dad's signature wouldn't that tell you they were married at least at the time of the OP's birth?
Did you not read what I said.

A dad can register a birth alone.  But only if he is married/cp to the birth mother.
Yes, I read what you said. I was aware of this, as my husband registers both of our children as I was in hospital at the time, as I already wrote a few posts back (that you have quoted)..

People are saying to the OP that something he can look into is who registered his birth. I have said if that was done by his Dad then wouldn't that tell  him and his Mum were married at the time of his birth and whether they are/were married is what the OP wishes to find out.

Apologies if my response sound brusque but it wasn't intended that way.

If dad registers the birth alone - he must be married/cp to baby's mother.

Having not got a birth certificate at hand and having not looked at one for several years  are you saying you can only find out if 1 or 2 people registered the birth than who actually registered?

I'm not quite clear of your question here sorry.  The birth certificate (regardless of when it is issued) will be a certified copy of the register (including any amendments) at the time is was requested.

Yes, I know. My husband registered both of our children. I wasn't there, I was still in hospital.

Is a signature of who registered the birth on the birth certificate (I haven't got our kids  certificates on hand to look at)?.

If the answer is yes, then if the OP looks and it's his Dads signature only then yes his Dad and Mum were married at the time of his birth (he's asking how to find out if his parents are married in the opening post).

If there is no signature on the birth certificate but you can make enquiries as to who registered the birth of the OP, and it's just Dad's name who did so then again yes his Mum and Dad were married.

If it's Mum's signature or both signatures then no it doesn't tell him but if it's Dad's only then yes it will.

There will be a signatory name.

If Mr Spendless registered, then it will say Tom Spendless (or however he signs his name).  But his signature won't be there, just his signature in written form.

No birth certificate has a signature on it other than the registrar's signature.  The original register has the signature on but that remains with the register office.

The OP has to check what name/signature is recorded.

If it's Mum's signature or both signatures then no it doesn't tell him but if it's Dad's only then yes it will.

If there is only mums name, then mum chose to not name the dad and is unmarried or her spouse is not the father.

If there are two signatories, then they are mum and dad but they were not married/cp at time of birth.

If it is only dads name then they were married.

I hope that is a bit clearer - sorry I am on a phone and it's not the easiest to edit :-)

Ok my mum says there is a marriage certificate and my brother says as its a legal process it will be online record of marriage. Hopefully this does the trick. Need to see the certificate before i believe it though. And if no cert or if invalid then no inheritance

only the registration details of it will be online, on the free site ( freebmd goes up to about 1984)  or subscriptions sites ( generally up  to 2007) .  You will have to purchase the cert itself (from the GRO online is easiest)  for the full information.

There must be a reason why you're not convinced they're married or if the marriage is valid. If you tell people the reason of your concern, they can help you further.

Exactly that @Spendless. No inheritance for who? Is @F37A wanting to be sure his mother inherits if no will or afraid his dad has left everything to the cats' home? 🤔 Seems like a lack of communication all round.
